Prestwick Airport is located 32 miles South West of Glasgow city centre. The airport is well connected by the M77 motorway.
Prestwick Airport commenced life as an airfield in 1913 intended for small bi-planes to take off the grass Meadows of Monkton village. It wasn’t until 1934 that an aerodrome was build and the airport came to life.
The airfield was used as a training facility before World War II. The Scottish Aircraft Pioneer, David McIntyre, purchased 348 acres of land outside of Orangefield House in Ayrshire, and launched Scottish Aviation Ltd in 1935. Within the commencement year offices, training rooms, a hanger and a control tower had all been fabricated.
The site quickly evolved during the outbreak of World War II and by 1942 America’s involvement in the war under the Lend Lease programme led to 300 inbound aircraft each day which had to be redistributed across the UK and later mainland Europe.
