Ardureck Castle and Calda House

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Sutherland

Traveling in your Motorhome hire rental vehicle on the A837 north of Inchnadamph at the east end of Loch Assynt  you can visit two historic ruins. The shell of Calda House and, a little to the west, the ruins of Ardureck castle are easy to spot from the road. There is a parking area for your campervan hire and some excellent information boards. It’s a short enjoyable walk to both ruins but be aware these are dangerous structures, so stand clear of possible falling masonry. The castle dates back to 1490, originally owned by the Mcleods of Assynt. There is an interesting story of betrayal of hospitality attached to the castle. For more information and a location map, visit the website at ‘ Undiscovered Scotland’.

The Castle is the most northerly of Scotland’s great houses and is certainly one of the most majestic.

Dunrobin Castle has been used as the setting for several films. It is the largest house in the Northern Highlands, and is one of Scotland’s oldest continuously inhabited houses, dating in part from the early 1300s.

Ferrycroft Visitor Centre is open from April till October and is regarded as situated on the northern crossroads. It is also a cultural crossroad. The centre is well worth stopping to visit and the children in your party will really enjoy all the games, displays and interactive experiences available here. Adults too, will find a great deal to interest them. You can hear local people recounting local tales and personal stories. Open the Lairg photograph album and look at past photographs of local life. You will also learn about the building of Lairg Dam and life before that, stretching back a thousand years. The grounds are also popular with children with opportunities to run about and use the swings, or the whole family can picnic here. If you are a keen walker Ferrycroft has a trail up Ord Hill. There are magnificent views at the top of the hill so the climb has its rewards! The visitor centre has achieved 4 star Visit Scotland status and is open from 10am to 4pm.
