Blair Castle

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Perthshire

Blair Castle is set in quite possibly the most stunning part of Scotland. The countryside which envelops it is scenic and dramatic with beautiful mountains and forested areas. It is rich in wildlife and chances are you will be lucky to spot some of the unusual inhabitants which include golden eagles, red squirrels and red deer as well as otters. But for some, the main attraction will be the castle itself or the fact that it is the garrison for the Atholl Highlanders, private army to the Duke of Atholl, famed for being the only legal private army in Europe. The history of the castle goes back over 7 centuries and has always had a strategic role in Scotland’s history, being nestled at the foot of the Grampian Mountains and on the route to the highlands. It has existed through three major periods of development which began in the Medieval times and was followed by major development in both the Georgian and Victorian eras. Each period of development has left its imprint clearly on the castle. The garden has also evolved over time and includes a beautiful 9 acre walled garden built in the Georgian era. It is named the Hercules Garden, after the statue which over looks it and is particularly stunning in the summer months when the beautiful herbaceous border comes to life. Year round interest is provided by the impressive ponds and folly as well as the Chinese bridge. Some of the country’s tallest trees are located in the forested area and there is also woodland adventure playground which the children will love. Take your time to enjoy your journey to Blair Castle in your Perthsire motorhome hire as you will be traveling through countryside unsurpassed for its beauty anywhere in Scotland. You will be following the A9 Northwards towards Inverness and will follow the signs to Blair Atholl approximately 7 miles north of Pitlochry. The gates to the Castle can be found within the village itself. For further information on this wonderful attraction click the blue link below.

Dunblane Cathedral

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Perthshire

Dunblane Cathedral is an awe inspiring building rising up in the town of Dunblane. The Cathedrals history goes back to 1233 when Clement, a Dominican Friar, became Bishop of Dunblane. He found a Church attached to a tower. He complained to the Pope saying that the church was not sufficient to merit his being a bishop there. The Pope gave permission eventually for more monies to be given to clement to build the Lady Chapel and the Cathedral as it is today. Over a period of 300 years the furnishings became more and more elaborate. In 1560 the Church of Scotland became protestant and the usage of the cathedral altered. In the 16th century the roof of the nave fell in and it remained roofless for 300 years. In 1889 Sir Howard Anderson, a famed Scottish Architect, began the restoration which was completed in 1893. The cathedral is a treasure trove of carvings, exquisite stained glass windows and wonderful architecture. Within the Cathedral you will find a haven of peace and tranquility. You are also welcome to take part in the services held here if you wish. If you are traveling in your Scottish Campervan Hire, this beautiful building is well worth a visit.
