Culbin Sands Nature Reserve

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Nairnshire

Around 16 miles (26 km) east of Inverness is the county town of Nairn in Nairnshire. Travel a further1.5 miles (2.4 km) east of Nairn to discover the idyllic setting of Culbin Sands Nature Reserve.  You can access the reserve from Highland Council East Beach car park. After passing through Nairn on the A96 from Inverness, go over the river; take the first left towards the caravan park on Maggot Road. At the road end, turn right, through the caravan park to the car park. It is a remote and unspoilt reserve and a lot of natural driftwood such as logs and shells ends up on the sands. A truly beautiful place, with the bank of dunes that separate the forest, from the flat beach. Take your binoculars with you in your Motorhome because in summer Eider ducks breed locally and can be seen resting on the sand bar. Dolphins can sometimes be seen in the firth and occasionally the quiet visitor may see otters from the more remote parts of the reserve. Look out for many types of butterflies, including the small blue butterfly, especially during June. Bird lovers can also see oyster catchers, ringed plovers and if you are lucky, Osprey.  During late summer to late spring, large numbers of bar-tailed godwits and knots flock at high tide.  It’s a Highland Council-owned car park at East Beach with space for approx 40 cars. There are also Council-owned public toilets at the car park, including disabled toilet which requires Radar key. It’s a remote and very lovely area to travel to in your Edinburgh Motorhome Hire. Take your camera and you are bound to have plenty of opportunity to capture wildlife on film! Culbin Sands Nature Reserve is just the place for a summer walk and is open at all times. Entrance is free, but donations to help continue the good work going on here are welcome.

Culloden Battlefield

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Nairnshire

On 16 April 1746 Culloden was the site of the famous battle between the Jacobite forces of Bonnie Prince Charlie and the ruthless English, led by the William August, Duke of Cumberland. The English army actually had more Scotsmen in their army than the Scottish forces, but it is often regarded by many as the last great battle between Scotland and England! The forces led by Bonnie Prince Charlie intended to put him on the British throne and oust the Hanoverian power in Britian. The battlefield was a bad choice for the scots  as they had no high ground to do their highland charge, that’s quite apart from the fact they were grossly outnumbered.  It was a bloody battle and the redcoated English army had superior well disciplined forces who won the day. They showed no mercy to the Scots, and injured clansmen were put to death where they lay after the battle. This brutality by the Duke of Cumberlands forces  at Culloden Battlefield was not forgotten by the Scots. Prince Charlie escaped and fled to France. The return of Bonnie Prince Charlie to reclaim the throne was much talked about but never happened.  The site has a large and interesting Visitor centre with plenty of information. This is an interesting place and well worth a visit in your Motorhome hire if you are on holiday in the area.
