Burleigh Castle

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Kinrossshire

The remains of this Scottish Castle are open to the public from 1st April until the 30th September. Access to parts of the interior is by Key which is held at the address and telephone number below. If you want to visit the interior towers of Burleigh Castle then telephone and arrange a visit prior to setting out. The castle is one of seven in the county, each one within sight of the other. The idea was that a beacon from the tower house could signal attack, and be seen by all, as the signal was passed with beacons from castle to castle. Built in the 15th century, this castle has a long and interesting history. The fifth Lord Balfour, particularly, had an interesting life. After murdering the local school teacher, in a fit of jealousy, he was sent to jail. He escaped death in Edinburgh jail by dressing in his sisters clothes. He is alleged to have hidden in a tree on the estate before escaping abroad. Finally, he returned to fight in the uprising of 1715 and was killed. With no heirs to the title, the castle fell slowly into ruins. In 1868 the title was revived and a Mr Alexander Bruce became the new Lord Balfour of Burleigh. He was secretary of state from 1895 to 1903.The original castle was completely surrounded by a moat. The best remaining part is the four storey tower which can be viewed in its entirety. The castle is said to be haunted so if the hairs on the back of your neck stand up during your visit it may be the psychic presence of a ghost from the past1! If you are in Kinrossshire in your Scottish Campervan Rental include a visit to this special place. For more information click the blue text below.

Kinross House Gardens

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Kinrossshire

This impressive garden has a view of the castle and trees on the other side of Loch Leven. It was built by Sir William Bruce in 1685 in the Italian Style. At the time it employed a team of gardeners that included children. The children worked as weeders to keep the garden trim. The house has a walled garden and the shelter provided gives opportunity for the roses, herbaceous borders to thrive. It also has a pool and parterre. You can also see topiaries created at intervals throughout the gardens.  This is a truly grand garden and of national importance in Scotland. If you love gardens or just enjoying strolling in lovely and awe inspiring environments then a walk in this delightful garden is for you!  At the start of this century the house and gardens underwent a full restoration and you are now able to enjoy the creation conceived centuries ago. Surrounded by woodland, the house and gardens are located between the town of Kinross and the banks of Loch Leven. In fine weather this is a place to relax and take photographs. It is well worth a visit in your Scottish Campervan Rental. For more details click the blue link below.

Loch Leven Castle

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Kinrossshire

Situated on Castle Island, this imposing Castle was famous for being the prison stronghold of Mary Queen of Scots. She was kept prisoner here from 1567 to 1568. She was the prisoner of the owner, Sir William Douglas and here she was forced to give up her right to the throne. The visit to Loch Leven Castle is certainly exciting as it can only be accessed on the ferry between April and September. Admission to the castle is included in the ferry ticket price. Built in the fourteen Century, this is one of Scotlands oldest Known Castles. The castle tower house is four storey’s high. Above the main hall Mary was imprisoned and a window was converted especially for her to enjoy the view. Whilst living here Mary miscarried twins. She had a doctor in residence with her who lived in the apartment above her. It is an interesting place to visit steeped as it is in Scottish History. To roam the castle, imagining the drama of previous lives that took place here, is certainly something to stretch the imagination and get everyone thinking. To get to the Castle follow the sign posts to the pier from nearby Kinross. Park your Scottish Campervan Rental at the car park which is located 90 metres from the boat departure point. Unfortunately Wheelchair users cannot use the boat and be aware that the ferry may not operate if water levels or weather conditions are not good. Once the ferry has taken you to the other side you walk across grass which can be muddy depending on the water levels of the loch. In wet weather wear boots or wellingtons. The castle and ferry are not suitable for people with limited mobility.

Vane Farm

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Kinrossshire

Vane Farm is part of the National Nature Reserve at Loch Leven. It is a wonderful place to view birds in ideal surroundings in Scotland. The visitor Centre is open from 10am till 5pm throughout the year except for the Christmas and New Year Holidays. There is a café there too which is a welcome thing if you are visiting in cold weather as they sell hot meals until 3pm. The reserve is run by the RSPB who charge a reasonable entrance fee. This is an excellent place to visit with the whole family. Children will love visiting the hides and trying to spot the amazing Ospreys that are seen on the Loch in summer.  There are plenty of other birds to view as well. You get close to nature here and if you own binoculars then remember to take them with you. Cameras are useful too for capturing that ‘special moment’. If you and your family are feeling energetic and the weather allows it, then go for a walk up Vane Hill to see the fantastic view from the top! Its steep but the rewards at the top are well worth the walk. If you have never been bird watching before, don’t worry, the staff there are extremely helpful and will answer any questions you may have. To get to the reserve drive two miles east of Junction 5 on the M90. Turn left on the slip road, then turn right onto the B9097.  Then drive in your Scottish Campervan Hire, just two miles along look for the nature centre car park entrance situated on the right.
