A castle, a park, a pet’s corner at Dean Castle Country Park

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Ayrshire

There are three great  things to experience on an outing to Dean Castle Country Park, the castle indoors, the fabulous outdoor space in the country park and a well stocked pet’s corner. On top of this there is a visitor centre, a shop and that all important tea room. This is the place to take the whole family to visit as part of your tour of Ayrshire on your Motorhome hire from Glasgow. The Country Park has woodland walks, an adventure playground, and plenty of space for the children to burn off all that excess energy. You may well spot the fallow deer in the park and the herd of Highland cattle too. Inside the 14th Century Castle is a world class collection of historic weapons, armour and musical instruments. If fighting and weaponry or making music is of no interest to younger members of your party then the pet’s corner will certainly capture their attention. It is well stocked with the usual small creatures, rabbits guinea pigs, plus Bruno, Lucy and Murron the kune kune pigs and goats, sheep and even bigger creatures like cows and donkeys, put in an appearance. The more interesting wildlife is perhaps featured in the many aviaries containing exotic birds. If you enjoy looking at birdlife there are also ponds teeming with water fowl. Dean castle Country Park makes an excellent day out as part of your Motorhome Hire from Glasgow.

Scottish Maritime Museum

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Ayrshire

Children nearly always love boats and the opportunity to see a collection of restored boats floating at the Harbour side is well worth a visit on your holiday in north Ayreshire. The Scottish Maritime Museum is unusual in that you get to see a Clyde Puffer, a harbour tug and a classic steam yacht on the sea. Some how, it is easier to relate to the boats and the fishermen, when you see their vessels as they would have seen them. You can imagine these brave fishermen starting work, coming down to the harbour to board and set off on their often dangerous journey out to sea. Or they could be working in the harbour itself, guiding boats to safe moorings. On the second site close by there is also the shipyard workers’ tenement flat, restored to its pre-1920s appearance. When not on their boat you can get a real feel for how tough life was for them ashore as well. Life was clearly harsh for shipyard workers centuries ago. You really appreciate your holiday and how easy it is to travel and live in your Scottish Campervan Hire compared to the lives that some of these locals led a century ago. There is still more to see here. Children can use the remote controls and also become a captain of a model boat on the indoor boating lakes. There are plenty of displays to keep everyone occupied including Scotland’s ‘Cathedral of Engineering’, the Linthouse Engine Shop, which was built in 1872. Visiting this museum at Irvine whilst on your Scottish Campervan Hire Holiday certainly helps you relate to the history of this interesting town. The Scottish Maritime Museum is open from April to October with a reasonable admission cost. Check their website by clicking on the blue text for Scottish Maritime Museum.

Vikingar Experience

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Ayrshire

Escape to the Viking times by watching a twenty minute film about Vikings at the Vikingar Experience in Largs. There are also interactive exhibits, and children will love the narrators of the Viking story’s and myths. Here you can learn something of the Norse gods and the turbulent history of the Viking invasions of Scotland. These fierce Norwegian warriors came across the ocean to pillage and make battle with the Scottish armies. This must have been a fearful time for Scottish people living on the coast as they saw the Viking ships approaching. The Viking Experience now has an extended opening season so check actual opening and admission times prior to setting out in your Scottish Motorhome Hire. There is also a gift shop to buy those Viking memorabilia to take home.
The Viking Experience is not the only activity taking place at this particular centre so pack your swimming costumes as public swimming is available in the swimming pool. There is also a fitness suite and gym to exercise off those extra pounds if you have eaten too much during your holiday! The views from this centre are spectacular from its position on the seafront. If you plan your visit well, you can also visit the Barfield Theatre for an evening’s entertainment. The beauty of having your Scottish Motorhome Hire holiday is it gives you the flexibility to travel when you wish and perhaps involve yourself in some of the activities of the Vikingar Experience. You can locate the Viking Experience on Greenock road, towards the north end of Largs Promenade, opposite the sea front.
