Corrie Fee National Nature Reserve

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Angus

If you want to see and walk through majestic and spectacular scenery and experience the wild and beautiful scottish countryside at its best, then Corrie Fee Nature Reserve is the place to go to. Located above Glen Doll at the head of Glen Clova in the Angus Glens the Reserve is a giant scooped out bowl, an amphitheatre of rocky landscape sculpted by the  glaciers.  This harsh mountain environment is the place that golden eagles love to live, soaring overhead from rocky heights, and feeding on the small creatures in the plants beneath. The Peregrin falcon also is known to be in this area. Corrie Fee NNR is one of the best places in the UK for rare arctic-alpine plants, montane willow scrub (including the rare woolly willow) and nationally scarce plants such as purple coltsfoot, the fern Alpine woodsia and yellow oxytropis all grow here.25km north of Kirriemuir.  The reserve is best accessed from the car park and ranger base in Glen Doll, at the head of Glen Clova. There is a visitor centre reception at the Angus Glens Ranger Base offering informative displays and a wide range of leaflets including walks in Glen Clova and Glen Doll, Glen Esk and Cycling in the Angus Glens. If you intend to walk, take appropriate sturdy shoes and waterproof coats, as even on a fine day the weather can suddenly change dramatically. If you intend to take a particular walk advise the warden and ask for local advice on the distance, terraine and weather conditions. The ranger base operates from 9am till 6pm in the summer months (April to September) 9amto 4.30pm in the winter months (October to  March) . There are often guided walks undertaken by the ranger and these would be particularly interesting as rare or unusual plants and wildlife is pointed out as you walk. To get to Corrie Fee National Nature Reserve from Kirriemuir, follow the B955 for 9.3 miles north to Clova Hotel at the end of Glen Clova, then take a left over a small bridge and follow the road for 3.1 miles to the Forestry Commission Scotland car park at Glen Doll. Ensure that you leave your Scottish Motorhome Hire safely in the car park. Pull down all the blinds and check lockers and doors are secure before setting out on your walk. There is a £2 charge for Parking for your Scottish Motorhome Hire is not permitted further than the car park. After parking your motorhome you access the entrance to the NNR on foot 2.2 miles further along the tracks.

St Vigeans Sculptured Stones

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Angus

If you are on holiday in Angus, Scotland, and love history you will be unable to resist a visit to St Vigeans Sculptured Stones. Housed now indoors in a cottage museum in St Vigeans these carved stones date back centuries. By 1000AD people no longer understood the significance of the stones and many were broken up. Luckily thirty eight remain and are preserved in St Vigeans.  These significant scultures are examples of Pictish Art and craft at its best. They were made at a time when this place would have been of huge religious importance. Possibly a Royal Estate and certainly the hub of pilgrims and monks meeting for ceremony and prayer took place here. The village now have these stones which are examples of the earliest art to be found in Scotland. The Droysten Stone is the stone to look out for. It was probably made on commission of a rich patron and it was believed to be part of the tomb or shrine of St Vigean himself. The Picts used their own language and this can be seen carved on the side of the stone. Keep a look out too, for a stone that depicts St Paul and St Anthony in the desert breaking bread together. In 1871 the minister of St Vigeans recognized the importance of the stones and preserved them in the church until in the 1960s they were relocated into the village museum. If you are in the area in your Scottish Campervan hire pay a visit to see these ancient relics. For more information on the history of the stones click the blue text below.
