Aberdeen Airport Motorhome Hire

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Aberdeenshire

Aberdeen Airport motorhome hire in Scotland provides over 30 United Kingdom and abroad destinations, and constitutes the world’s busiest heliports, carrying over 400,000 helicopter passengers to North Sea oil and gas platforms annually. Aberdeen Airport opened in 1934 as Dyce Airport and grew quickly with the discovery of North Sea oil in 1967.

Aberdeen Airport has a single runway with 3 helicopter landing pads. Terminals include operating one terminal for charter flights, four terminals for North Sea helicopter operations and one primary oil company charter flights terminal.

Popular flight locations include Holland, Heathrow, Gatwick and London Stansted.

Aberdeen Airport is merely 7 miles from Aberdeen city centre, the closest railway station is Dyce about 2 miles from the arrivals exit. Local cab firm Comcab perhaps is a more adept choice when journeying into town.

Balvenie Castle

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Aberdeenshire

Balvenie Castle is a magnificent and imposing ruin set in the heart of Glen Fiddich. The surrounding countryside is absolutely spectacular and the castle itself whilst no longer intact is an awesome focal point on the landscape. Over the years three dynasties have occupied the castle as the families were either elevated or disgraced due to their chosen allegiances. It occupied an important position in the political landscape of its time. It was originally built by the ‘black’ Comyns of Buchan, but they lost their position by backing the ill feted John Balliol and the castle was granted to the ‘black’ Douglases by Robert the Bruce upon his accession to the throne. Ultimately they too lost their position under James II who chose to grant the castle to his relative John Stewart. The price that they paid for the castle was said to be one red rose. It was the Comyns who built the humungous defensive stone curtain wall that still dominates the site today. Their successors also made an impact albeit in a less obvious way by installing the domestic buildings in the courtyard. Under the Stewarts the castle was somewhat changed from a defensive stronghold into a more comfortable renaissance home. However the fate of Balvenie castle did not come through any dramatic power struggle, ultimately it was abandoned for a modern residence built a mile away. It is somewhat ironic that the magnificent castle still stands to this day whilst its successor was demolished in the 1920’s to make way for the expansion of the Balvenie distillery, which incidentally is also well worth a visit while exploring the area in your Aberdeenshire motorhome rental. Castle Fraser

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Aberdeenshire

Dating back to 1575 this is now a grand Baronial Scottish Castle. Castle Fraser was the home of the Fraser family who were lairds of this estate. From the round tower you can gaze out at the gardens and estate beyond and realise the view will be remarkably similar to the one viewed by the castles inhabitants over hundreds of year. From Medieval times to Victorian times this castle has been bustling with busy inhabitants going about there daily business. You can now stroll through the great Baronial Hall, imagine the feasts held here, then stroll on through the library and rooms filled with family furniture, books and family mementos. The grand work room contains embroideries that were worked here centuries ago. The many paintings of the Fraser Family will bring the family to life. The extensive grounds afford plenty of opportunity for walking through near by woodland. Closer to hand is the lovely eighteenth century walled garden which is a delightful place to walk through on a sunny day. There is also a restaurant open in the evenings only . Places at the restaurant must be pre booked. Call  Telephone 01330 833879 or Telephone 01467 642834 to make a restaurant booking. There is also a tea room. Castle Fraser, Garden and Estate

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Aberdeenshire

Castle Fraser is the ancestral home of the Fraser family who has lived here since the 15th century. It is completely steeped in the history of the medieval and Victorian period and full of the original furnishings, momentos and portraits of the family left intact when the property was gifted to the Scottish National Trust. The castle is elaborate in its structure, based on a z-plan style and believed to be the work of master mason John Bell. Between 1820 and 1850 the interiors of the castle were entirely remodeled and the library in particular is a fine example of the regency style of the architect John Smith. In the 1920’s the last Fraser of the direct line died without an heir and the castle was bought by the first Viscount Cowdray who used the castle for a shooting lodge and eventually gifted the property to the National Trust for Scotland. Of course like most Scottish castles it has its very own ghost story and you will notice the wood paneling on one of the stair cases which it is said covers the blood stains of a princess who was murdered in one of the castle bedrooms and her bloody body dragged down the stairs leaving a trail of blood. Legend has it that the young woman still stalks the castle by night to this day. The castle was also used as a setting for the film The Queen which starred Helen Mirren and which won her an Oscar. If the sun is shining whilst visiting Fraser Castle it is well worth enjoying one of the beautiful woodland walks around the lovely grounds. You will find the castle in your Aberdeenshire motorhome hire 4 miles north of Dunecht and 16 miles North of Aberdeen. Crathes Castle, Garden and Estate

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Aberdeenshire

Crathes Castle is an ancient and beautiful castle set in a magnificent estate near to Aberdeen. It is just how you would imagine a Scottish castle to look with its fairytale turrets and mysterious gargoyles, it is quite a site to behold. Its reputation for being haunted also gives it a slightly spooky feeling. It was occupied by the Burnetts of Leys for over 350 years and its interesting history begins with the gift of the land on which the castle now sits from Robert the Bruce in 1323. Inside you will see the ancient jewel encrusted ivory Horn of Leys which was gifted to the Burnetts by the King along with the land. There is also a significant collection of portraits and beautifully painted 16th century ceilings. The family still live in the castle to this day although it is under the guardianship of the National Trust for Scotland. The gift and book shop is well worth exploring, there is an extensive collection of books on a wide subject range including Scottish history and interest. There is a lovely courtyard café which sells light meals and cakes and in the clement weather there are outside eating facilities. If the weather is good it is well worth exploring the garden which is famous for it June borders which are magnificent when in bloom. Please be sure to spend a day at Crathes Castle whilst traveling in your Aberdeenshire motorhome hire as you will not be disappointed. It really is a great place to immerse yourself in ancient Scottish history.

Dunnottar Castle

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Aberdeenshire

Located just off the A92, less than two miles south of Stonehaven, Aberdeenshire is Dunnottar Castle. This is a most spectacular castle to visit on your Motorhome hire tour.
Accessible by footpath from the nearby Castle Car Park, this castle has a steep access path . There are also a number of steps so the walk may not be suitable for everyone. Breathtaking views surround this castle. Take a torch with you if you want to safely visit some of the dark castle chambers and walk cautiously along the steep paths and uneven floors. This is an adventurous place steeped in Scottish history. It was here that Kings and Queens visited and Cromwell’s army failed to capture the castle after eight months siege. This stronghold held and saved the Scottish Crown Jewels from Cromwells men. Dunnottar Castle is an amazing place, probably one of Scotlands most photographed castles.

Dunnottar Castle

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Aberdeenshire

To say that the ruins of Dunottar Castle occupy one of the most spectacular coastal locations in the whole of Scotland would not be an understatement. The site has been a settlement for Pictish people since 5000 B.C.  Indeed, the name Dun is a Pictish word for hill fort. When St Ninian brought Christianity to Scotland in the 5th century he chose this site for one of his churches and in later history the Vikings seized and destroyed the castle. You don’t often get such diverse history in one setting! Even William Wallace was said to have set fire to the chapel here with English soldiers taking refuge inside. Indeed a poem about this act is thought to have been inspiration for the film Braveheart. The Keiths, one of the most important Scottish families of the time lived here at the castle and held high Scottish office. It was not therefore unusual for the monarch to spend time here, indeed Mary Queen of Scots was one such royal. So Dunottar held an important place in Scottish history until disaster struck. The last earl was convicted of treason during the Jacobite uprising and all his estates were forfeit to the crown as a consequence of this. From this time the buildings remained neglected and fell into disrepair until 1925 when Viscountess Cowdray began to repair the castle. Since this time the Castle has been open to visitors who have enjoyed the splendour of the setting and the historic atmosphere to this day. While traveling to Dunottar in your Aberdeenshire motorhome hire you will enjoy stunning views of the lovely surrounding countryside. Fyvie Castle

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Aberdeenshire

Fyvie is an ancient and historic castle set in the lovely Aberdeenshire countryside. It has graced this site since the 13th century and has seen the coming and goings of many famous and important Scottish figures. An open air court was held at this location by Robert the Bruce and served as home to Charles I as a child. It remained a royalist stronghold until the Battle of Otterburn in 1390 when the castle became a private home and was subsequently owned by a series of 5 families. It is said that each of these 5 families added a tower to the castle as a mark of their ownership and thus it grew it in size and importance. When under the ownership of the Seaton family the impressive entrance tower was built and the grand processional staircase was installed. Of course, like most Scottish castles it claims its own ghosts. It was said that a skeleton of a woman was found within one of the castle walls and following her exhumation and reburial strange hauntings began. Lore has it that she was subsequently reinterred within the castle wall and the haunting stopped. But there is more to the castle than just ghost stories. It is home to an impressive range of arms and armoury as well as an important collection of paintings. It is well worth stopping off at Fyvie Castle whilst traveling in your Abeerdeenshire motorhome rental as it is considered to be one of the most beautiful castles in Scotland. Huntly Castle

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Aberdeenshire

Huntly castle is set in the middle of the beautiful Aberdeenshire countryside. Today the castle sits as a splendid ruin still remarkable for both its architecture and for its fascinating history. The castle was built by the earls of Fife as a stronghold around 1190 in its strategic position guarding the confluence of the rivers Bogie and Deveron.  The estate was granted to Duncan Earl of Fife as a reward for serving the king and it is in all likelihood he who built the original motte and bailey. In the 14th century the historic Gordon Clan made the castle their seat and renamed it Huntly. It was lost by the Fifies, who chose to back the wrong side, after Bannockburn, when a victorious Robert the Bruce granted the lands to his supporter Gordon of Huntly. The family was later granted the title Earl of Huntly and the name of the castle was changed. It was George Gordon, nick named ‘Cock o’ the North’ who remodeled the castle in the 1550’s, and it was further embellished by his grandson to mark his becoming a marquis. It is this work that still stands for all to see today. Although the castle is now a ruin, the historic atmosphere of the Castle still remains and it is still a site of pilgrimage for members of the Gordon clan from allover the world. If you are traveling near Huntly in your Aberdeenshire motorhome hire don’t miss a visit to the castle, it is open all year round and guided tours are available on certain days. It is open from the 1st April To 31st October 2011 and Tarland village is only a five-minute walk away. At Tarland you will find shops, a bowling green and a golf course. The site itself is excellent for a base for walkers. There are open views towards Mount Keen, Lochnagar and Morven. The town of Aboyne is six miles from the site, and has shops and a swimming pool. The theatre is central to the Aboyne and Deeside Festival in July. If you are lucky enough to be in the area in August you can visit the local Highland Games. Further a field, to the east lies Aberdeen, known as the Granite City. Here you will find good shops, theatres, galleries and museums. A bus from the village goes to the city centre if you don’t want to take the Motorhome. Tarland is the area chosen by Royalty. The Balvenie Distillery

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Aberdeenshire

The story of the Blavenie Malt Whisky is entangled with the history of this beautiful and historic area from which the liquor hails. It began with Balvenie castle, standing in a strategic position and being used by kings and noblemen as a pawn in their political games. Many of the famous figures from the history of Scotland including Robert the Bruce and Mary Queen of Scots have strong and close links with the Castle. However by the early 1700′s the castle was abandoned in favour of a more modern residence one mile away from the castle. It is on the site of this modern residence that the distillery now stands and produces the whiskey made from barley grown on the Balvenie farm. The distillery still uses the traditional techniques that it has employed down the centuries. It is one of the last distilleries to still use a malt floor. Four men work shifts attending the floor to ensure that the germination rate is just right so that the sugar levels are perfect for the whisky making process. The metal floor of the kiln room is perforated and underneath it a peat fuelled fire is in place which penetrates up through the floor and into the barley. Following this there is a mashing process followed by that of fermentation and distillation and after that the liquor is poured into the barrels to mature. The distillery still has its own cooperage to ensure that the casks are of the highest standard which in turn will lend the whisky its unique Balvenie flavour. If you decide to visit the Balvenie distillery in your Aberdeenshire motorhome hire it is necessary to book your tour in advance. The Museum of Scottish Lighthouses

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Aberdeenshire

North of Aberdeen, drive along the A90 road until Fraserburgh and then look out for the sign posting for the Museum of Scottish Light Houses. If you are driving from Inverness you take the A98 through Nairn, Elgin and Banff to Fraserburgh. Visiting this museum is a truly fascinating experience and likely to be of interest to the whole family. There is something about a lighthouse that will interest the young and fit or old and energetic members of your group. That has got to be, getting to the top of the lighthouse. Count the steps because there are a great many steps to climb up and once up you have to come down. The spiral view down the centre of the lighthouse is not for you if you are afraid of heights! Once up at the top seeing the actual lighting gear is amazing. This beacon illuminating the seas will have saved countless lives. There is also a lot to learn here. There are strange and eerie tales of disappearing light house keepers who may have been swept out to sea. Stories of war time losses and near death experiences suffered by the brave keepers of these lighthouses. There are also special events throughout the season, so keep a look out for what may be happening when you are on your Edinburgh Motorhome Hire tour of Scotland. Perhaps one of the more interesting and unusual events is the International Lighthouse Weekend. The weekend is held for 48 hours in 2011 20th to 21st August and in 2012 on 18th and 19th August. This is an annual Amateur Radio Weekend Event led by the Ayr Amateur Radio Group. The lighthouse station operators will aim to make contact with as many other amateur radio stations as possible in this free fun event. There Is also a museum shop which sells books, gifts, postcards and prints. Before setting off to visit, in your Edinburgh Motorhome Hire, check out the opening times and admission prices on The Museum of Scottish Lighthouses website.
