Arlington Court

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Devon

Arlington Court is a beautiful family estate. At its heart, the house provides a perfect example of a Regency home fit for a family of wealth and status. The house was built by Colonel John Palmer Chichester and designed by the local architect Thomas Lee. The Chichester family, were minor Devonshire Gentry who used the house to home their eclectic mix of treasures. Within the beautiful stone walls of the house you can view collections ranging from model ships to shells all collected originally by the family. The gardens of the estate are picturesque and interesting and provide a perfect area to enjoy a picnic or a place to let the children let off some steam. The lovely Tea Rooms are as self sufficient as possible using the fruit and vegetables from the walled kitchen garden. The garden also provides an array of lovely flowers which are displayed within the house itself. However, Arlington provides an even bigger surprise in the form of its extensive carriage museum. It houses a collection of over 50 horse-drawn carriages. These range from the Hansom cab to the State coach and provide a history of the horse and carriage down the ages. You can even see a Hearse carriage, or one so small that only a shetland pony is able to pull it. There are still working horses at the museum which provide daily demonstrations. To get to the property in your Devon motorhome hire take the A39 where your will find the house 8 miles north of Barnstaple. If you are traveling from the East use the A399 from South Molton. Babbacombe Model Village

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Devon

Babbacombe model Village is a great day out for the whole family  but especially for the children. You will experience hundreds of tiny houses, people and cars all set within this beautiful garden, including scenes from the past the present and the future. The gardens themselves are fabulously landscaped and award winning in their own right, so there is a lot more to see besides the miniature models. Amongst the lovely and extensive plants on show the park has recently acquired a Wollemi Pine tree which is one of the rarest and oldest trees on earth. It was known only by its fossilized remains until a walker found one in a park near Sydney Australia in 1994. It was an amazing botanical find and likened to finding a live dinosaur! Now the race is on to conserve this tree for future generations. When you enter the village you will buy a day pass that will enable you to spend time at Babbacombe village both in the day and at night when the famous illuminations are switched on. There is a café on site serving snacks and lunches and in the summer there is a burger kiosk open on the garden terrace. Please note that parking for the attraction is in the near by local authority car park. To get to the model village in your Devon motorhome hire follow the signs for Torquay off the A38 or A380, you will then be able to follow the brown tourism signs once you are in the Torbay Area. Buckfast Abbey

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Devon

Since the time of King Cnut there has been a monastery at Buckfast.  The monastery was originally Benedictine, but has also been Cistercian in its time. Like all monasteries in England the nature of the Abbey has changed and evolved with history and in accordance with the decisions and policies of monarchs. After the dissolution of the monasteries under Henry VIII the abbey fell into disrepair, lead was stripped from the roof and the stone used, whilst removables were auctioned. The abbey stood derelict until it was bought and a manor house built on the site. Following subsequent changes of ownership in 1872 James Gale was keen to sell the property but wanted to offer it to a religious community. Within weeks and after a gap of 343 year Monks were once again in residence at the abbey and so it remains to this day. Over the years the order has restored and rebuilt the monastery, much of it by hand themselves. Notably Brother Dom Charles Norris a former student of the Royal College of art made artistic development at the abbey his life’s work. These art works include stained glass windows, marble floors and ceiling paintings. He also created windows for churches throughout the country. In an effort to improve the lay communities understanding of the monastic lifestyle, the order have actively encouraged visitors by improving facilities such as car parks and restaurants for the many people who choose to spend a day at Buckfast Abbey. Indeed this is a splendid way to spend some time whilst traveling in your Devon motorhome hire. For further information on this interesting day out, please click the blue link below.

Castle Drogo

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Devon

Castle Drogo, is known for being the last castle to be built in Britain. It was never intended to be used as a castle in a defensive manner and was in fact built as the family seat of an ambitious and very wealthy entrepreneur. This enormous property is built entirely of granite and was fully intended as a display of the wealth of its owner Julius Drewe. A man of relatively modest background, he made a fortune through the Home and Colonial Stores, one of  Britain’s largest retail chains which he built from a single store in Liverpool. Although Drew had fabulous wealth, he was intent on elevating his position within society and saw the building of the castle as a lever into the gentry. He commissioned a reluctant Edwin Lutyens to design the house for him. The famous architect was keen for Drewe to build a beautiful house, but the enormous budget that was available persuaded the reluctant architect to take the commission and design the castle. Unfortunately although the design of the castle was an undoubted success, as a building able to keep out the notoriously bad Dartmoor weather, the castle was and is a disaster.  The castle leaked from so many areas of its enormous roof as well as through the pointing between the granite blocks and even the 900 windows  that Drewe’s Great Grandson could no longer cope with the enormous task of trying to keep the property watertight and as a result gave the property to the National trust in order to save it for the nation. Today, the trust is trying to raise £11 million to save the castle from the ever encroaching water, so by visiting castle Drogo in your Devonshire motorhome hire, you will not only have a fabulous day out, but you will also help to save this amazing building for future generations. Please note that the entrance lane is quite narrow. For further information on this fairy tale castle, please click the blue link below.

The walk from Wembury beach to Wembury Point is aprox. 1 hour on level ground which can become slippery when wet (2 hour return in total). Pre booking through the National Trust is essential for this exciting family expedition. Take a sketch book and encourage your young explorers to draw their finds! Ensure you are dressed for the weather with plenty of sun cream and suitable footwear for rock pooling. I would also take a towel just in case. Small children and water seem to go together exceptionally well! Bring with you a packed lunch for a picnic. Please meet at Wembury Beach car park in front of the Marine Centre. Book and pay in advance from the National Trust website before setting out in your holiday Motorhome hire. Dartmouth Camping and Caravanning Club Site

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Devon

The camp site is well located with views over Start Bay on the coast. Dartmouth is just five minutes drive away and you are best advised to use the Park and Ride which is in operation on the outskirts of Dartmouth, particularly if you are in your Motorhome. Dartmouth is a really interesting deep water port worthy of a visit. It has narrow streets crammed with boutiques, shops, art galleries and delicatessens. Dartmouth is the place for the dedicated shopper or for those of us that just love browsing. There are excellent boat trips along the river to Agatha Christie’s house/Drake’s boathouse and other sights. The last week in August will be exceptionally busy in Dartmouth as they hold the Port of Dartmouth Royal Regatta. If you don’t want to visit the town, the on-site shop has some basics but has limited opening times. Alternatively, there is a garage and shop next to the site, which is open between 8am and 6pm. You can also catch the bus from the site entrance. The award-winning Blackpool Sands beach with its crescent shaped bay is just a mile away. On arrival with your Devon Motorhome Hire, look for the Deer Park Inn sign, this is a shared entrance. The site is open from the 15th March to the 15th November 2011 and booking in advance is advised during the high season. Exeter Airport Motorhome Hire

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Devon

Exeter Airport grew from a grass airfield base in 1937, by Exeter airplane enthusiasts.

During World War II the base had a diverse use as a fighter base then base for the accompanying operational squadrons: No 213, No 87 and No 601.

RAF Exeter was used during D-Day by the US Army Air Force (USAAF) Ninth Air Force as a troop transport base using Douglas C-47 Skytrain transporters for the 101st Airborne Division. It was then called USAAF Station 463. They famously discharged paratroops close to Carentan to help with the Normandy beachhead.

After the war the base was used by Walruses of the RAF air-sea rescue squadrons.

The Exeter base was afforded a return back to civil use in 1947, but was still used as a reserve RAF base until the 1950s. In 1952 scheduled flights from Exeter Airport were offered to the Channel Islands and more locations followed. Following a new terminal opening with runway extension Exeter became established as an important international airport in the West Country of England.

Exeter Airport now offers chartered flights to within the United Kingdom, Europe and Canada, making Exeter Airport motorhome hire a popular choice.

It makes a great day out for all the family but travel there can be expensive as visiting Lundy Island requires a two hour cruise off shore on MS Oldenburg. MS Oldenburgh sails from Bideford or Ilfracombe up to four times a week from the end of March until the end of October carrying both day and staying passengers. This trip on board ship is an exciting event in its own right for all the family. Children particularly will love the adventure. Leaving your campervan hire on the mainland and then traveling across to an island will be a further highlight off your campervan hire holiday. There are no cars on the Island. The village shop sells Lundy stamps so now is the time to purchase postcards and send off those holiday greetings to friends and family back home. There is also local Lundy beer sold in the tavern. The real reason you may want to visit this unique place must surely be the walking and the wildlife. Plymouth Airport Motorhome Hire

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Devon

Plymouth International Airport is situated 5 miles north of Plymouth city centre, just off the A386 highway.

Opened in 1923 as an experimental project offering up flights to Birmingham, Manchester and Belfast.

In 1925 the airport was used as a parcel hub to help accelerate up the transatlantic postal service. Airplane couriers like Western Air Express, Olley’s Air Service and Railway Air Services all used the airport on their postal service routes.

It wasn’t until July 1931 that the airport was officially opened by HRH Prince of Wales, Edward VII as a commercial passenger airport.

Great for visitors exploring the South, Plymouth Airport motorhome hire is a popular option.

Powderham Castle

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Devon

A visit to Powderham Castle is a must for all visitors to Devon. The castle has been home to the Earls of Devon for over six hundred years and is still lived in by the Courtenay family today. The castle and its family have had a starring role in many of the important events and wars which checker the history of England. In Tudor times the Earls were involved in many of the intrigues of the period with Edward Courtenay spending some time in the tower of London having earned the wrath of King Henry VII and a later Earl being beheaded in 1538. The Civil War period once again saw the family in trouble, with Powderham Castle a royalist stronghold, being besieged by the roundheads and acting as a garrison for some time. During this period it was not lived in by the family and remained empty until the Georgian period when the castle was once again restored with the long hall being transformed into different areas and much of the beautiful rococo plaster work being created. In Victorian times the beautiful raised gardens were developed facing out over the River Exe. The estate is also home to a spectacular deer park which contains many beautiful trees and avenues planted in the 1700’s as well as a magnificent herd of fallow deer which numbers around 600 of these beautiful creatures. If you have an interest in trees, it is well worth visiting the woodland garden which is planted with a variety of exotic species from around the world. Be sure to look out for the more unusual items upon your visit to the castle, the mummified rat found under a slate during roof repairs is now on display in the gallery and the family’s ancient tortoise can occasionally be seen in the courtyard garden. So during your travels in your Devon motorhome hire be sure to spend some time at Powderham, enjoy the history and splendor of the castle and indulge in some light refreshments in the Courtyard tea rooms. If you are lucky with the weather you can sit outside and soak up some of the lovely West Country sunshine. For further information, click the blue link below.

Saltram

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Devon

Saltram is a fine example of an early Georgian house set in delightful parkland with its original contents still intact. If the property seems familiar to you it may well be, because it has featured in the 1995 film Sense and Sensibility. The house was purchased in 1712 by George Parker and it is his descendents who have reigned over and developed this magnificent property until it was taken over by the National Trust in lieu of death duties in 1951. It was after John Parker inherited the house in 1743 that the house was given its Palladian facades which mask the Tudor origins of the house. It was however the associations of his daughter in law Theresa that resulted in the acquisition of portraits by the famous Devon artist Joshua Reynolds.  It was at this time that the lauded architect Robert Adam was commissioned to create a suite of neo-classical rooms. Amongst these rooms, the Saloon, is considered by many to be the architect’s finest piece of work. The family’s artistic leaning continued during the period of the Earl of Morley whose wife was herself an accomplished water colour artist who also produced Old Master copies. These are on display in the house today. In later times the family fortunes fell into decline despite inheriting other large estates. The second World War brought damage to the house and estate which ultimately resulted in the house being relinquished to the National Trust. This truly magnificent property is definitely worth a visit in your Devon campervan hire and is an absolute must for all lovers of neo-classical architecture. SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Devon

This is an idyllic location overlooking Start Bay and just a few minutes to the beach. You can buy locally produced bacon, sausages, burgers and cheese at the shop on site. Local Stokeley Farm Shop also sells other local produce and if you are there in the right season, you can pick your own fruit. Torre Abbey

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Devon

At the time of writing this article Torre Abbey is currently closed and reopens in 2013/2014. It will be well worth adding to your places to be sure to visit in the future. It closed in 2005 and has been undergoing a massive restoration programme costing over six and a half million pounds! This huge sum of money was achieved from a grant of 4.9 million from Lottery funding and the rest made up from a variety of foundations, museums, English Heritage and council funding. Located in Torquay, Devon the Abbey is the oldest known building in the town. It is rather special historically as it has two buildings that are grade one listed it is without doubt of national importance. Following restoration parts of the Abbey can be seen by visitors for the first time as they would have been out of bounds previously as the building had not been structurally safe. There is also going to be a new visitor centre and shop. There will also be a new cafe, toilets, car parking and extensive art and craft galleries. This will be a rejuvinated site that will hold events and exhibitions as well as workshops on site. A great deal to look forward to here. The historic cloister gardens will also be restored to former glory and this venue promises to be an experience  not to be missed. There is also an enclosed Palm House full of tropical plants from around the world. You can also see rare plants here from the collections at Kew Gardens. There is also a collection of plants that displays the medicinal and piosonous properties of plants sourced by Agatha Christie in her novels.Agatha Christie was born in Torquay and this collection is a small tribute to her work, as she had a great interest in plants.
Built originally in 1196, the Abbey was founded by six canons who arrived here from Welbeck Abbey in the midlands. The land was gifted to the Canons by Lord William Brewer. After the dissolution of the monastries the property was purchased by a succession of private owners and then finally owned by the local council who undertook to make it accessible to the public.Include Torre Abbey in your future Devon Motorhome Hire Holiday trip.
