Bempton Cliffs Nature Reserve

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in England

This is the place to watch sea birds so ensure you take your binoculars. The reserve has more than 200,000 birds (from April to August) which make these cliffs a haven for bird watchers. There is just so much to see, with adults bringing food to their nests, or young chicks making their first flights. The RSPB reserve is open at all times, from March to October, and the visitor centre is open daily 10 am to 5 pm. from November to February, 10 am to 4 pm.  If you are a beginner regarding bird watching this is an ideal place to start as there are huge numbers of birds to spot. You and your family will soon easily learn the difference between gannets, guillemots, razorbills, kittiwakes and fulmars.  Best of all during the period between April and July you can spot the endearing puffins. Eight seabird species breed here, and in winter, common passerines (buntings, sparrows and finches) and short-eared owls (vary in numbers from one year to next) can be seen and identified. Dogs must be kept on leads at all times. This is to ensure that ground nesting birds are not disturbed. If you are close to Bridlington in your Yorkshire Motorhome Hire then stop at Bempton Cliffs Nature Reserve to view the amazing wildlife that live here in this spectacular scenery. Beningbrough Hall and Gardens

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Yorkshire

If you are interested in portrait painting, then a visit to Beningborough Hall will surely be a great day out for you. This beautiful Georgian house has one of the country’s most spectacular baroque interiors but is also home to upwards of 100 portraits which are currently on loan to the hall by the National Portrait Gallery. In 1716, following his grand tour of Italy, local landowner John Bourchier III built this spectacular mansion to replace the more modest Elizabethan manor which had been in existence at the site since 1556. The family home was nearly lost due to their involvement in the death of Charles the 1st. Following the crowning of Charles the 2nd, the house came under threat of confiscation, but was luckily saved. Unfortunately the house fell into disrepair after being inherited by distant relatives of the Bourchier family and at one time was under threat of being demolished. Thankfully a wealthy heiress, the Countess of Chesterfield  bought it and  began its restoration. For a while it was used to house airmen from the near by bomber squadron during the war. After the death of the Countess in 1957 the house was again in limbo, until the National Trust took over the property and began to work in conjunction with the Portrait Gallery to bring the house to life for the visiting public. Outside the house there is plenty to see and do, including a look back at the days before the automatic washing machine in the Victorian Laundry. There are plenty of activities in the gardens including a wilderness play area, walled garden, orchard and a new Italianate border and garden shop. You will find Beningborough Hall in your Yorkshire motorhome hire 8 miles North-West of York off the A19 and the A59. For further information on the Hall, please click the blue link below.

There are some hard standing, fully serviced, pitches available so ensure these are booked in advance to accommodate your needs. Brodsworth

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Yorkshire

Brodsworth Hall is a magnificent Italianate mansion built by Charles Thelluson and lived in by his descendants until being taken over by English Heritage.  The house is displayed in the manner in which it was last lived in with the family’s possessions still on show as they would have been when the house was still a family home. Unfortunately the house fell victim to subsidence and leaking roofs which were fought valiantly by the last occupant Sylvia Grant-Dalton. Following her death in 1988 English Heritage took over and preserved the house as it was when she left rather than restoring it to its original condition. You will see how the family chose to abandon the gigantic Victorian kitchen in favour of a smaller Aga kitchen as funds and servants dwindled. There is a vast collection of sporting memorabilia including the mummified hooves of their star race horse Rataplan who won the Doncaster Cup. There are also paintings of their yachts and horses and the billiard room remains a gentleman’s retreat, or a place to get away from the ladies after dinner! Recently a rare stuffed passenger pigeon, now extinct, from America has been identified within the collection of artifacts. The gardens by contrast have undergone restoration work that is still continuing. The Dolphin fountain in the formal garden is back in working order and acting as a central focus point as intended. The garden summer house has also been restored and is a great vantage point for the pleasure grounds as well as the formal gardens. This magnificent house is situated close to the A1, 5 miles North West of Doncaster and easy to find in your Yorkshire motorhome hire. Doncaster Sheffield Airport Motorhome Hire

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Yorkshire

Doncaster Sheffield Airport is the former name of Robin Hood Airport which today is an international airport located in Doncaster, South Yorkshire.

During World War I, Doncaster Sheffield Airport was used as a base for the Royal Flying Corps in their attempt to intercept German Zeppelins. During the Cold War the airport became even more important when it then became a base for Vulcan bombers which held nuclear arms.

Although the airport was decommissioned in 1995, a boom in budget low-cost flights led to its re-opening in 2005, under the new name: Robin Hood Airport.

Many visitors still retain its original name and for that reason Doncaster Sheffield Airport motorhome hire is a popular choice. There is often confusion with Nottingham East Midlands Airport and Robin Hood Airport as Nottingham is the traditional home to the legend, however his name has been lent to the Doncaster-based airport.

Kiplin Hall

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Yorkshire

The history of Kiplin Hall began almost 400 years ago but references to the site go back much further and even appear in the Domesday Book. In the late 16th century the Calvert family leased the land at Kiplin and it was on the property that George Calvert was born. He later went on to become Secretary of State to James I. He was a major influence on the colonization of the Americas even investing his own money in a settlement in Newfoundland which he called Avalon. In 1622 he began to plan the building of the new manor house at Kiplin. It is thought that he may have designed the house himself with the help of a master builder and was likely to have been influenced by the work of Robert Lyminge who was responsible for both Hatfield House and Blikling Hall. Little is known about the family’s activities at this time as they had been granted the patent for the land of North Virginia and were residing in the newly named Maryland. The estate went on to be sold to 2 other families and the house underwent further changes and expansion. In 1904 the estate fell on hard times. It had been inherited by Sarah Carpenter who gradually sold off the farmland and the gardens went into decline. Sarah had married and moved to Lincolnshire and the large Yorkshire estate had become a burden to her, eventually she made her cousin Bridget Talbot a joint owner and it is she who is responsible for the survival of the house today. Now for the first time in over 100 years, the garden has a head gardener and already the topiary structures are re-appearing from within the overgrown hedges. The rose garden and walled gardens are regaining their former glory and the Peninsula wood is noted for its lush bulb planting and gentle walks. If you are feeling energetic there is a mile long walk along the lakeside which enjoys beautiful views as well as a variety of bird species. If you find yourself near Scorton in your Yorkshire motorhome hire do visit Kiplin Hall. There are plenty of events throughout the year with a special Christmas fair. For American visitors there is a Maryland Study Centre which may be of interest. For further information, please click the blue link below.

St Roberts Cave Knaresbourough

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Yorkshire

roberts-cave.JPG

Beside the River Nidd on the outskirts of Knaresborough, Saint Robert’s Cave was a medieval hermit’s home. This site once attracted thousands of pilgrims.
Robert of Knaresborough lived on this site in the late 12th and early 13th centuries.

The small cave is carved into the face of the limestone cliff, and the remains of a chapel and Robert’s living area survive.

Robert’s Cave is located on Abbey Road in Knaresborough, a few hundred yards from Wetherby Road. The site is marked by a roadside interpretation board. Entry is through a wooden gate at roadside, down to the river via a path and a set of fairly steep steps. Care is needed as the path and steps can be slippery.

St Roberts Cave Knaresborough
Access by motor home to the cave is difficult and parking is extremely limited. A layby on the roadside will accommodate two vehicles. The best route is a leisurely walk along Abbey Road from the town centre, approximately 25 minutes. Alternatively, parking is available at the St James Retail Park on the A658, and the site is a 10 minute walk.

Studley Royal Water Garden

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in England

On a fine day there can be no better way to spend your time than walking through one of the uks best examples of a Georgian water garden. Studley Royal Water Garden was first envisaged by John Aislabie in 1718 and after his death, his son William continued to enlarge it by buying the adjacent estate. It is difficult to imagine this valley in its original state with wild fields and woodland being transformed into such a wonderful garden. The Aislabie family had the vision and the huge amount of money required to transform it into this spectacular place. It is a masterpiece of man made ornamental lakes, canals, temples, cascades and statues. At every turn the eye is caught with a stunning view, making an ideal photo shot. The most photographed view is probably The Temple of Piety in the water garden. Dedicated to the Greek God Hercules, this neo-Classicism temple was intended as a cool garden house.  Take your camera or sketch book as there are views here that will inspire you. The garden also has follies which include a rusticated palladian banqueting house and a neo.gothic castle.  Look out for the “Surprise View” which was designed to make the viewer gasp with surprise at the breathtaking view! There is also a grotto and a deer park. This is a lovely place, well worth a visit in your Yorkshire Motorhome Hire. For more details of this stunning water garden, click the blue text below.

Temple Newsam

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Northern England

If you love your history then you will find Temple Newsam a delight. It was home to the Ingram family for over 300 years until purchased by Leeds City Council. In recent times the house has undergone a thorough restoration funded by the heritage Lottery Fund, which includes audio guides, wheel chair access and a wealth of activities for children. The property is notorious for being the birth place of Lord Darnley, the ill fated husband of Mary Queen of Scots and is a spectacular Tudor-Jacobean mansion. The property houses an impressive collection of art as well as ceramics and silver. It also displays exquisite fabrics and wallpapers including a Chinese paper given to Isabella, Marchioness of Hertford by her lover George IV. The grounds of the property are spectacular and despite open cast mining having taken place in the early twentieth century, the genius of Capability Brown is still in evidence today. In Victorian times, there was extensive planting of Rhododendrons which provided floral interest but also acted as cover for game. This planting has become synonymous with the house itself as has the Azalea walk. The gardens are also home to a national collection of Delphinium, Phlox and Aster and features beautiful drifts of daffodils in the spring. Home farm, situated within the estate is home to a comprehensive selection of rare breeds, including poultry, sheep, cattle and pigs. In history this farm was used to produce most of the food consumed by the people living at the house as well as for the servants that lived and worked there, nowadays the farm is also a visitor attraction. You will find Temple Newsam in your Yorkshire motorhome rental  4 miles from Leeds city centre off the A63 or 2miles from J46 off the M1. Facilities on site include a tea room where rare breed sausages and burgers produced on the farm can be sampled. For further information please click on the blue link below.

The Forbidden Corner

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in England

The Forbidden Corner in the Yorkshire Dales was originally built as a private folly but due to public demand was subsequently opened to the public. It was the idea of Mr C.R.Armstrong O.B.E .The four acre garden is laid out with a unique labyrinth of Tunnels, Chambers, Follies and surprises. It is arranged as a labyrinth and is an interactive maze. A cherub with a well aimed jet of water or a revolving floor could well feature among the surprises that greet you as you make your way through the gardens. Children will just love it. If your children are very very young they might find parts a bit scary but I would think the vast majority of children will simply love this adventure playground that has a touch of magic. Lots of walking involved so if you have children who have been traveling in your Yorkshire Motorhome Hire this is the perfect place for them to stretch their legs whilst having a unique adventure. Walking around the Forbidden Corner takes about two hours. Pick a good weather day to get the most out of this venue. To gain entry you must book in advance as admission is by pre-booked tickets only. This is a place you could easily want to visit more than once! If you are on holiday with children, The Forbidden Corner is definitely a place to include in your Yorkshire Motorhome Hire Holiday.

White Scar Cave

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in England

The spectacular cave was discovered in 1923 by Christopher Long. For millennia, limestone deposits have been laid down within the cave. Later the deposits were hollowed out by the action of water to create this spectacular cave system. Within the cave are crazy cave formations that grow in horizontal spirals, these are called helictites, these exist along side a spectacular show of stalactites and stalagmites. There is a shop stocking rock and mineral samples, jewellery, toys and other interesting gifts and books. The visitor centre is within a covered courtyard which houses the ticket office and information room. The roof of the centre is eco friendly and covered in grass to blend in with scenery of the National Park. There are many places of interest near the cave. It is situated 8 miles from Hawes, with its countryside museum and traditional ropemakers. Nearby is the historic village of Dent. To get to White Scar cave in your Yorkshire Motorhome rental, turn off the B6255 road directly onto the tarmac car park. The entrance to the cave is above the car park. Note that there are stone steps or an ascending path to the cave entrance.  There is a café serving snacks and meals which has lovely views of the dales towards the coast. York Castle Museum is one of Britain’s leading museums to visit in your Motor Home. A museum everyday life, that shows how people used to live by displaying thousands of household objects and by recreating rooms, shops, streets – and even prison cells.

It is best known for its recreated Victorian street, Kirkgate, which combines real shop fittings and stock with modern sound and light effects, to evoke an atmosphere of Victorian Britain.

Kirkgate street was named after the museum’s founder, Dr John L. Kirk, a North Yorkshire country doctor who collected everyday objects and wanted to keep them safe for future generations.

The museum’s room settings include a Victorian parlour, an 1850s Moorland cottage, Jacobean and Georgian dining rooms, a 1940s kitchen and a 1950s front room.
