Alnwick Food Festival 24th 25th September 2011

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in England

Alnwick is a treat to visit in the north, as it’s a jewel of a market town. The food festival is the largest food and drink festival in the North East which makes it even more special a place to travel to.  The North East of England is noted for excellent local foods. The town will be welcoming visitors from all over the country, indeed, all over the world, as local producers show off and sell their wares. Around 20,000 people visited the 2010 Alnwick Food Festival and enjoyed the wide range of produce in the free market, with top-class entertainment and free cookery demonstrations by local chefs. Join the crowds for 2011 and you may see some TV celebrities. Sean Wilson, formerly Martin Platt in Coronation Street and contestant in the BBC Celebrity Masterchef show is a possibility. He is now a cheese expert, having set up the Saddleworth Cheese Company, which makes artisan cheeses, including one designed especially for the Alnwick Food Festival, Rumpy Pumpy, which included a special ingredient, Alnwick Rum. Cookery demonstrations, talks, food and drinks trails, wine-tasting sessions, a chocolate-making, special recipes, offers and surprises are all part of the Alnwick Food Festival experience. Making a visit to the Alnwick Food Festival in your Northumberland Motorhome Hire will really be of interest to all your family. Everyone loves Food! It is best to park your Northumberland Motorhome Hire on the outskirts of town as parking will be extremely limited. Remember that you are driving a tall vehicle and avoid low bridges !

Beadnell Bay Camping and Caravanning Club Site

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in England

This site has standard grass pitches only,  so there is no hard standing or electric hook ups, so it is not ideal for a Motorhome. However, if the ground is hard and dry it is worth staying overnight for the view and location. It can be very windy here too,  so avoid using your awning unless it is constantly supervised. There is also no designated Motorhome Service Point on Site, therefore a hose for filling and a bucket for emptying the grey water tank will be essential. There are 150 pitches in the grass field and there is a basic toilet block with hot showers. The site is open from 14th April to 26th September. Beadnell is a few minutes walk and the beach is quite literally across the road! It’s a lovely sandy beach with the sand dunes of the North Northumberland Heritage Coast. You are surrounded by the best of local food, so before you arrive on site stock up on fish at Seahouses. Swallow Fish Ltd in Seahouses supplies local wet fish, including crab and sea bass. For meats and cheese and pies etc find Robert Carter and Sons in Bamburgh and Craster is famous for its smoke house so get your smoked kippers for breakfast there! Beadnell Bay was a popular site for smugglers and often customs officials captured gallons of contraband liquor here. This site is for the more adventurous Northumberland Motorhome Hire user who is prepared to risk camping on grass. Remember that you are a in a heavy front wheel drive vehicle, so avoid the site in wet weather when the ground could be soft.

Belsay Hall Castle and Gardens

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Northumberland

Billed as one of the best family days out in north-east England Belsay Hall and Castle is a complete day out with plenty to see and do. The Middleton family has developed the estate over seven centuries beginning with the castle and its defensive tower, this being used as a stronghold during the Anglo-Scottish warfare. It was also an impressive family seat and was decorated in rich medieval wall paintings. Later, in peaceful times a Jacobean wing was added to the castle and here the family lived until they moved into Belsay Hall in 1817. This Greek revival villa is now empty of all furnishings which enables the fine craftsmanship to be seen in its purest state. This was the design of Sir Charles Monck (formerly Middleton) who was inspired by the ancient buildings of Greece which he had witnessed on his honeymoon. He was also responsible for the huge and impressive gardens. He made the quarry garden where he had removed stone from the ground to build the hall. Subsequently his grandson did more work in the quarry garden and established some exotic species within it, as well as developing other areas of the garden. If you are feeling peckish during your trip there is a lovely café set inside the original Victorian kitchens which serves snacks and refreshments. You will find the castle and hall in your Northumberland motorhome hire 14 miles north of Newcastle off the A696. Chillingham Castle

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Northumberland

Chillingham castle has played a critical role in the history of Great Britain not least because of its strategic site in the north of England and close to the Scottish border. The castle has acted as a stronghold since the 1200’s and was used as a launch point for the offensive against William Wallace by Edward I. Indeed a commemorative glazed window was installed at the castle to mark the occasion of his visit, a rare thing indeed at the time. Because of its position, the castle was often attacked by Scottish armies heading south and its fortifications over time were upgraded to improve its defensive nature. In 1344 King Edward III issued a license to crenellate and the structure effectively became a completely fortified castle. When the two countries became peaceful under James I the need for the castle to act as a military stronghold declined and the castle was gradually transformed into more of a comfortable home. Today the castle is best known for reputation as a haunted house, it has featured on many TV shows such as Most Haunted. Its most famous ghost was known as the ‘blue boy’ who haunted the Pink room. However his apparition ceased to show itself after renovation work found the skeletal remains of a man and a boy as well as ancient documentation within a 10 foot thick wall. If you are looking for a spooky encounter there are still many other apparitions who are said to appear within the castle, considering the eight recorded executions of family members it is not surprising that these ghostly rumors still abound. If you have had your fill of spooks there is plenty more earthly but none-the-less grisly stuff to look at in the torture chamber, or if you fancy something a little more tame there are plenty of interesting and historic artifacts on display throughout the castle. This really is an interesting day out for all the family, so don’t miss it whilst traveling in your Northumberland motorhome hire. For further information, please click the blue link below.

Howick Hall Gardens

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Northumberland

A day out at the magnificent gardens of Howick Hall would leave anyone delighted by the beautiful and natural style the garden evokes. This historic property is home to the Earls Grey, famous for both their political achievements, the 2nd Earl having served as Prime Minister and for their connections with the tea. Indeed the second Earl introduced the Great Reform Bill to parliament in 1832 which acted as the first step on the road to modern parliamentary democracy. However it was not all work and no play for this politician as he still had time to father 15 children with his devoted wife. He was also responsible for having his own special blend of tea developed in China to suit the lime water at Howick. This tea contained bergamot in particular and soon became a hit in London when his wife used it whilst entertaining her visitors. Unfortunately the Earl did not have the foresight to register the Earl Grey trade mark and has subsequently received no royalties. You can sample the tea in the lovely tea rooms situated in the former ball room whilst on your day out. Indeed you may be in need of refreshment after enjoying a walk round as there is plenty to see. Largely the work of the 5th Earl and later his daughter, the formal Victorian layout was swept away and the more natural planting style which had become the vogue, was introduced. The gardens are rightly famed for their collections of bulbs, so spring is definitely an excellent time to visit, in high summer the bog garden and the herbaceous borders are spectacular and the beautiful woodland walks are a year round favorite. So if you are traveling near Alnwick in your Northumberland motorhome rental, be sure to explore these lovely gardens. For further information, please click the blue link below.

Morpeth’s Chantry Bagpipe Museum

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in England

Morpeth Chantry Bagpipe Museum has got to be one of the UK’s most unusual museums. This is a place for the bagpipe enthusiast and those of us who are just plain curious as to what is contained in a bagpipe museum! The Northumbrian Small Pipes, the unique local instrument of Northumberland, has a special place here. The original collection of bagpipes belonged to William Alfred Cocks, a member of the Society of Antiquaries of Newcastle upon Tyne. The collection moved to Morpeth and was officially opened in 1987 by HRH Princess Margaret. The really interesting aspect of this museum is the facility that allows visitors to hear many of the exhibits, using the museum’s infra-red sound system. You wear special headphones supplied by the museum, and can hear a sound-clip of the exhibit currently in view. Hearing the sounds of the pipes you are looking at gives quite a different dimension to Morpeth Chantry Bagpipe Museum. It’s an interesting little place and is housed with the tourist information centre at Morpeth. At the tourist information centre you can find plenty of local places to visit and lists of events in the area. Well worth a visit if you are in Morpeth with your Northern England Motorhome Hire. Newbiggin Maritime Centre and Village

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Northumberland

At the Newbiggin Maritime centre you can expect a state of the art experience as well as a day out at the sea side. Newbiggin is located in the heart of the Northumbrian Heritage coast, an area that is home to some beautiful beaches and quaint sea side villages. It has a long and fascinating history with archeological features that date back millennia. Mesolithic flint tools have been found in the area, which proves inhabitation by man stretching back hundreds and hundreds of years. A village has existed on this site since medieval times and is mentioned in many historical records. Fishing has been an important part of this area and is celebrated within the museum, which acts as home to the oldest active lifeboat in the country. Mining has also left its mark on the area and in the 1920’s was the largest source of employment with over 1200 men working the mine. The village was also a popular seaside resort for the wealthy of Newcastle and Sunderland. In the 70’s the village began to decline in popularity at the same time its historical industries suffered. But with the development of the centre and the beach project the area is having a resurgence in popularity. Within the centre there are various learning themes which cover science, history, nature, ecology and geography, as well as being able to explore the role of the lifeboat in sea side life. While exploring in your Northumberland motorhome rental, the maritime centre is an ideal place to stop and dine in the beautiful restaurant or browse in the shop which has a range of gifts and keepsakes including some lovely individual jewelry made by local crafts people. Paxton House

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in England

This spectacular 18th century Palladian Country house overlooks the River Tweed. It is set within an estate of woodland, parkland and gardens, originally landscaped in the 18th century by Robert Robinson. This is an excellent house to visit with the whole family and apart from the interior of the house itself there are a variety of riverside walks, trails and outdoor attractions for visitors to enjoy. The house dates back to 1758 when it was built by the Adams brothers for the young Patrick Home. Patrick furnished the dining room with paintings that were trophies of Patrick’s Grand Tours. The dining room also houses some of the finest pieces of Paxton’s Chippendale collection. The dining room provided the family with an opportunity to display its wealth and taste with cutlery and plate, linens, porcelain and crockery. The drawing room has panels of colour-printed trophies, which divide the walls, and the pretty arabesques with classical plaques above the doors,  which are a rare survival of an eighteenth century wallpaper, imported from France. The whole house is impressive and filled with treasures. Keen fishermen and women will also find the  Ellem Fishing Club museum, of great interest. It is located just off the courtyard and tells the story of the worlds oldest Fishing Club formed at Ellemford in 1829. The exhibition uses interactive displays, memorabilia and full-scale models. Traveling to Paxton House in your Northumberland Motorhome Hire is relatively easy. If you have never played croquet before now is your chance to test your skills against the rest of the family. Hire the mallets and putters from the main reception and have a go! The visit to the interior of the house will also be an interesting experience. It was built in 1758 by the famous Adams Brothers for the owner Patrick Home. He was clearly a very wealthy and privileged young man as this house was one of the finest country houses in the Britain. There are beautifully furnished rooms to view that give insight into the idyllic life led by the wealthy during the eighteen century. The picture gallery is well worth a visit as it now contains additional paintings loaned by the National Galleries of Scotland. There are works on show by famous painters such as Raeburn, Reynolds, Thomas Lawrence, Wilke amongst others. Seaton Deleval Hall

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in England

This beautiful baroque property was built for Admiral George Deleval who made his fortune from bounty whilst in the navy. The house was built by the famous architect Sir John Vanburgh who also built Castle Howard and Blenheim  Palace in similar style.  Seaton Deleval is however regarded as his finest work although neither Vanburgh nor his patron lived to see the finished house. Its history has not been a happy one, having suffered from fires and a broken line of succession which resulted in it being unlived in for much of its history. The existing gardens were designed by the landscape artist James Russell after the second world war and have subsequently been enhanced by the late Lady Hastings. There are many interesting statues and topiary as well as a pool and fountain. Of particular interest is the coach house which contains an interesting collection of vehicles as well as a fully restored ice house. Not forgetting the magnificent stables where the estate horses were once housed. Whilst you are there it is well worth visiting the East Wing café to taste the delicious Seton Deleval ice cream or pop into the shop in the West Wing Pavillion. To get to the house in your Northumberland motorhome hire take the A190 which passes through estate, this is only 5 miles from the A1. For further information, click on the blue link below.
