Bowber Head Camping Site

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Cumberland

This is a very small site for those of you touring in Westmoreland Cumbria. It only has five or six spaces for touring motorhomes and this is not hard standing but on grass. The owner assures me it is exceptionally well drained and they have not had anyone stuck in twenty six years. I am also told that there are plenty of four wheel drive vehicles on site that would assist if the unthinkable happened and the twenty six year record was broken by someone getting stuck. Apparently it is chalky soil so it is extremely unlikely. Perhaps I am over cautious with my Motorhome! The owners are very friendly and are vintage bus enthusiasts with quite a few vintage buses and coaches for you to look at on site. They also do vintage coach bus rides and tours from the site. Apparently they have events happening there to so it is best to ask if something is happening whilst you are going to be there. Its very rural and has quite a few static holiday homes on the site. There is a large paddock with a stream and swing, children and bus enthusiasts are very welcome. Charges for your Cumbria Campervan hire to stay overnight are £15 in 2011 without a hook up. With a hook up it costs £19. These costs can vary so it is always wise to check before you book in. On site at Bowber Head Camping site there is a toilet block with showers, cookhouse/laundry facilities in a seperate room in the main house and a payphone. For Cumbria Motor Home Hirers the site is basic without having hard standing but it is an option if you need to overnight in the area or are exceptionally keen on vintage buses and coaches.

Castlerigg Stone Circle

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Cumberland

Travel in your Lake District Motorhome Hire just 2 miles (3.2Km) east of Keswick to visit Castlerigg Stone Circle. Dating back to 3000BC its purpose remains a mystery and this adds to its allure. It is actually an oval not a circle, 107 feet (33ml) across at its widest point. Owned now by the National Trust, Castlerigg Stone Circle is impressive and is an almost magical place, surrounded as it is by the high fells. The 38 stones, and the 10 set in the centre, are made of volcanic Borrowdale rock. Walk from your Lake district Motorhome Hire and admire our ancestors achievement. We can now only marvel that the evidence of this ancient site has remained across the centuries. What ancient rituals took place here? What did the people who built it believe?  Retire back to your Lake District Motorhome Hire for a cup of tea and a chance to ponder at this enigmatic place. It was one of Britains earliest stone circles and its construction contains significant astronomical alignments. Maintained by English Heritage, admission is free. Church of St Kentigern

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Cumberland

If you are traveling in your Lake District campervan hire on the northern edge of Keswick it is worth stopping for a visit at the church of St Kentigern. Canon Rawnsley was the most famous vicar here, he became the first secretary of the National Trust which he helped found in 1895. His wife Mrs Rawnsley founded the Keswick School of Industrial Art and the church contains a font Ewer made at the School. Within the church is the tomb of Robert Southey, poet Laureat from 1813-1845, but probably best known for writing ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’. The church provides interesting leaflets about the building and the famous people buried there. Both have local and national importance. The church itself is a thing of beauty with fine examples of stain glass windows, a mosaic floor and features too numerous to mention. If you are on you are on your Lake district Campervan Hire holiday with friends or family involve them in a search for the set of 16th century consecration crosses, 12 outside and 9 inside the church. This treasure hunt is bound to keep everyone busy!

An Ostrich Farm in Cumbria in the Eden Valley, a few miles from Penrith is an unlikely and amazing thing! Muncaster Castle

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Cumberland

Set in the stunning backdrop of the Lake District, this historic and some say haunted Castle is home to 70 acres of stunning gardens and home to the World Owl Centre. A strategic site since Roman times, the castle and its surrounds are steeped in history and still remains a family home to this day. It is thought that the Pennington family has lived here since as far back as 1026 whilst recorded evidence exists from 1208 when the lands were granted to Alan de Penitone. Over the centuries the castle has been developed and updated to the magnificent building which stands today. In 1862 the renowned architect Anthony Salvin was instructed to modernize the house and is responsible for covering the courtyard and creating the present drawing room with it barrel vaulted ceiling. If you are a lover of the rhododendron you will be delighted to find that Muncaster is home to one of the largest collections in Europe. The Terrace is one of the golden features of the garden with its spectacular view over Eskdale and if you are lucky enough to visit in the Spring you will be dazzled by the carpet of bluebells which covers the high woodlands above the castle. A highlight of the visit is the Owl Centre which is home over 200 birds from all around the world. You can also be assured that you are doing your bit for the conservation of owls in the UK when you pay a visit here as the trust organizes a national nest-box scheme which is so important for the future of these truly magnificent creatures. Rydal Sheep Dog Trials and Hound Show 11 th August 2011

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Cumberland

If you are on holiday in August 2011 near Ambleside in the Lake District visit the Rydal Dog Trials and Hound Show at Rydal Park. Dog lovers will find this particularly interesting. The sheep dog trials are a marvel to watch as man and dog work together to gather the sheep into a pen. The training and dedication required by these dogs is evident and they love what they do as well! This is the 108th Vale of Rydal Sheepdog Trials and Hound Show to be held in the spectacular setting of Rydal Park, by kind permission of Mr Richard Le Fleming. The Park is approximately a mile north of Ambleside in Cumbria in The Lake District. There are also Foxhounds, a Dog Dash, Beagle and Harrier Show and a working Terrier Show. There is quite a lot to interest the whole family for a day out here. Your Lake District Motorhome Hire holiday will be a lot of fun when you include events taking place in the locality. Take your Lake District Motorhome Hire to the tiny hamlet of Rydal which is also of interest as it lies equidistant between Grasmere and Ambleside. Wordsworth lived here after his move from Grasmere and his famous home and garden at Rydal Mount is open throughout the year. Rydal Church is also well worth a visit and so is the millennium garden. A gate from the church garden opens into Dora’s Field, which was once bought by Wordsworth for his daughter.

Troutbeck Camping and Caravanning Club Site

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Cumberland

This is probably the most stunning location for a pitch close to the Lake Districts star attractions. The Campsite, currently in 2011, holds an AA5 Pennant Award. Nearby walking is unbeatable with amazing views and nearby shops are excellent. The Campsite is just off the A66 about 3 miles from Keswick and close to Penrith. If you are lucky you may spot a resident red squirrel, which are becoming increasingly rare further south. If you are a keen cyclist, and have brought bikes with you, the Coast to Coast cycle way passes directly opposite the Camping Site. The site has excellent reviews from other campers who have stayed there. If you want to do some horse riding on holiday, Rookin House Farm Equestrian is the place to go.  Or a visit to local Dalemain Historic House and Gardens, near Ullswater, may be of interest to those of you who love beautiful medieval, Tudor and Georgian architecture and gardens. SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Cumberland

A visit to Tullie House Museum is a great way to spend a day on your holiday. If you are unlucky enough to be experiencing some of the Lake Districts less inviting weather , there will be plenty to occupy old and young alike indoors. The museum focuses on collections of art, history and nature that have strong local connections as well as being of national importance. The recent opening of the Roman Frontier Gallery has proven to be very successful and received national plaudits for its excellent display. It describes the Roman occupation of the city of Carlisle which lasted over 400 years and features some loan pieces from the British Museum. The museum also contains artifacts from the time of the Viking invasions of Cumbria and charts the story of Carlisle from medieval times through to its modern industrial roots. In the nature section you will find wildlife and geology from this beautiful region as well as an important collection of insects and minerals from the Northern Pennines. Art from many of Cumbria’s best names is represented within the gallery as well as Pre-Raphaelites and other well known twentieth century artists. For the younger members of the family who want to get more hands on, there are plenty of exhibits that can be touched and examined as well as a life sized section of Hadrian’s Wall which children will love to climb on. There is even a badgers set to visit and Roman weapons to fire. The site is mainly flat and has lots of trees and bushes to break up the different areas for pitches making it an attractive place to stay. The site makes efforts to be environmentally friendly and welcomes families. Surrounded as you are by fields and rural wildlife there is always a possibility you may be lucky enough to spot a deer wandering, or rabbits hopping close to the campsite! If you are up at Dawn there is always the dawn chorus from a host of birds all ready to welcome the day! However, if like me you are likely to sleep through this, then the site itself is regarded as quiet and tranquil. You can purchase freshly baked rolls in the morning from the site shop and locally reared bacon to make those breakfast or lunch bacon butties! Near by there is a farm shop with a butchers and delicatessen at Plumgarth. The site has all the usual facilities and requires in addition, a £10 cash deposit for the barrier key, refunded on return. On site there is a bar/family room which serves food and beverages in the evening (limited opening November-April), also included is a pool table and TV.  Like all very popular campsites, Booking in advance for your pitch here for your Lake District Motorhome Hire is essential.
