Acton Historic Working Farm

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in England

You may have watched Ben Fogle’s BBC Television series’Escape in Time’ in 2010 and would love to visit its location at Acton Historic Working Farm.  The filming followed two families attempts to live life as Victorians, to step back in time, farming, baking, learning traditional skills. The inspiration for this series came from Acton Scott’s Historic Working Farm in Shropshire. Thomas Acton had the vision to preserve and keep alive 19th Century farming practices. Day to Day activities are funded and managed by Shropshire Council, as tenants of the Acton Estate. There is also a café and gift shop on the site and daily demonstrations of period skills. There is ample parking at the main entrance for your Shropshire Motorhome Hire. No dogs (except guide dogs or helping dogs) are permitted on site, as the stock roam freely.  If you are interested in a short course to learn traditional skills (e.g. a selection from keeping hens to heavy horse work is offered) then the farm organizes an interesting programme of workshops. For admission prices and opening times or information about their short courses, click on the blue highlighted Acton Historic Working Farm text. Your Shropshire Motorhome Hire opens up the possibilities of lots of interesting activities that you could take part in or just visit on your travels.

Oswestry Camping and Caravanning Club Site

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in England

With a backdrop of the sandstone crags of Nesscliffe Country Park this is a scenic Club Site in the rolling pastureland of Shropshire. Owestry is steeped in history and legend, the story goes, that Oswald’s Well is named after the time when an eagle flew off with one of Oswald’s arms. The arm was dropped and waters gushed forth. You are extremely unlikely to see something similar now but if you make a visit to Battlefield 1403, a new attraction in the area, telling the story of the battle of Shrewsbury which was one of the bloodiest conflicts on British soil, you may continue on the same theme! If local history is not your interest then the scenery will certainly lighten hearts and minds. Walkers have a variety trails to choose from in Nesscliffe Country Park.here are cycle paths to follow as well. Oswestry is on the frontier between England and Wales and has medieval buildings and an interesting mix of independent shops. A Farmers’ Market is held in Oswestry on the last Friday of the month and in Shrewsbury on the first Friday. You don’t have to travel to buy some basic breakfast groceries, as the site shop sells Local dry-cured bacon, sausages, eggs, milk, jams, honey, marmalade, rapeseed oil and surprisingly, icecream! You may be lucky enough to be at the castle at Whittington in the summer which has been restored by the local community and hosts historical re-enactments. During July, music lovers can enjoy the annual Eisteddfod at Llangollen. Llanymynech Heritage Area includes a nature reserve with peregrine falcons and wild orchids. A Hoffman kiln, originally for creating quicklime, is accessible to walkers. This is the area for heritage railways with five in the area including Cambrian Heritage Railway, Welshpool and Llanfair Light Railway, Severn Valley Railway and Llangollen Railway. Alternatively if you love a good view there can be none better than the view from the castle at Chirk. Achirk you can see over nine counties! Park Hall Countryside Experience

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in England

The ultimate place of interest for most children up to the age of 13 years old is the Park Hall Farm Countryside Experience. It offers everything you would expect of a farm centre e.g. lots of animals to see and stroke etc.  The bonus for younger children is all the additional play activities on offer. The junior Land Rovers at the driving school for children have got to be a real show stopper for your younger driver! Drivers must be aged between three to ten years of age.  There are also mechanical diggers and tractor rides. If the weather restricts what you want to do outside there are also two giant barns where children can play indoors. Here they will find soft play, Monkey business Adventure Play, and Woodland Adventure Play. There is also a Victorian farmhouse and a school room where children can participate in a Victorian school lesson. Some of the activities cost extra in addition to the entrance fee. If you are on holiday in your London Motorhome hire this is an ideal place to entertain your young family members with plenty of memorable photo opportunities. Children love this place and you are likely to tire them out with all the activities and fun to be had. As you drive back to your campsite with your London Motorhome Hire you can anticipate that the very young members of your party will soon be asleep when they go to bed in their bunk beds. SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in England

Drive with your Shropshire Motorhome Hire to visit the best preserved fortified Manor House in England, Stokesay Castle. Your Shropshire Motorhome Hire will take you to a photographers dream. The timber framed gatehouse is a delight in itself. Don’t miss the Great Hall, unaltered since it was built in 1291. The Great Hall has a fine timbered roof and staircase with treads cut from whole tree trunks. This medieval jewel is in the care of English Heritage. The car park is 300m from the entrance and the castle itself does have some steep steps. In wet weather avoid parking on the rough grass areas supplied in the overflow car park. The Land of Lost Content in Shropshire

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in England

Long after you have left the Land of Lost Content it will remain in your memory. It is that sort of place. You remember that you once owned or bought that and had forgotten all about it and now years later it has reappeared in a museum! Very odd! This is a museum and possibly an art installation on a grand scale. Originally set up by the owner, Stella, in a redundant church in West Sussex in 1991. It expanded (that’s perhaps an understatement!). The current museum is actually also called the National Museum of popular culture, which sounds incredibly academic and some how does not describe the informality and creative flair required to display and collect this amount of past junk.  It is crammed with recent history from the early 70’s onwards. Everything you may have once owned, stella has collected and not thrown away. It is banal, everyday, but weirdly exciting to see because there is just so much of it. Did we really have nylon stocking dispensers? The collection is vast and spread over three floors. An unbelievable amount to see and remember is on display here. This riot of colour and jumble is all displayed in the former Craven Arms Market Hall. They even do evening quiz events here. Definitely worth a visit if you are passing close by in your Shropshire Motorhome Hire. If you have made a visit let me know your thoughts on the Land of Lost Content, I would love to hear what you enjoyed here.
