‘Sculpture in the Sanctuary’ 23rd July till 29th August 2011

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in England

A sculptural celebration and extravaganza will be held at  Reg Taylor’s Garden Centre for 5 weeks and 6 weekends from 23rd July until the 29th August. Sculpture in the Sanctuary 2011 will be bigger and better than that of 2009. The Swan Sanctuary at Reg Taylor’s was first created by 16 year old Mark Taylor back in 1986, when he turned a flat wetland grass field into a wildlife paradise. Shortly afterwards his mother gave a permanent home to injured swans needing a permanent home, and then chickens, peacocks and waterfowl have been added. The sanctuary is set across a 15 acre site that encompasses 5 beautiful lakes and secluded areas all joined with winding pathways. This becomes the perfect setting for 101 Sculptors with over 400 exhibits set into the landscape. With 2 large internal exhibitions in 2 large glasshouses and a stunning outside exhibition this is well worth a visit. With so much to see that is outside it is best to visit on a fine day. If you are visiting the sculpture Exhibition in your Midlands Motorhome Hire take it to the bottom car park at Reg Taylors as you will have more space to park. A walk around the Sculpture in the Santuary  Exhibition will be a delight to the senses and a really enjoyable day out for all the family. Open seven days a week. For admission times and prices check their website.

2011 Robin Hood Festival

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in England

The Festival will be held from Wednesday 10th August until Sunday 14th August at the Sherwood Forest Visitor Centre just outside Edwinstowe Village in Nottinghamshire.  Enjoy a week long celebration of the legend of Robin Hood or just come for the day. There will be jesters, jousting, and Robin Hood and his merry men doing battle with the wicked Sherriff of Nottingham. There is something of a pageant and spectacle suitable for all the family here. You will also find archery, birds of prey displays and all sorts of Robin Hood related activities, except of course robbing the rich to feed the poor (an activity that has grown up as part of the legend of Robin Hood)! In fact , the festival entrance is free. Apart from the static displays at the visitor centre which give you a greater understanding of the history of the legend, there is also the opportunity to stroll in Sherwood Forest. No walk in Sherwood is complete without viewing the Major Oak. Said to have hidden Robin himself this huge monstrous oak is supported by huge metal supports and creates quite a sight as you enter the clearing from your forest walk. There is a great deal of fun here and no trip on your midlands Motorhome Hire Holiday would be complete without a visit to the Robin Hood Festival. Check out their website for event times and information as times vary for displays etc.

Dukes Wood Oil Museum

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Nottinghamshire

dukes-wood.JPG

Through the cooperation between the Oil industry and the Nottinghamshire Wildlife Trust this historic woodland museum is open to the public. It combines an area of ancient and secondary woodland with what was the site of the UK’s first oilfield. Some of the ‘nodding donkey’ pumps have been restored and can be seen on the trail. Parking is very limited, so this is not suitable for longer vehicles as turning will be a problem.

Take the 617 Newark-Mansfield road and just past Kirklington, take the side road north towards Eakring. The museum is well sign posted. You pass Whip Ridding Farm on the right, and travel to the top of the hill. On the top of the rise the lane on the right, leads to the reserve entrance.

Felley Priory

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Nottinghamshire

Situated in North Nottingham, Felly Priory is something of a hidden gem. The garden, set in 2.5 acres is absolutely spectacular and carefully planted to carry interest throughout the year. The priory was founded in 1156 on the site of an old hermitage. The monks who lived here enjoyed a good life with a carp pond and a small mill. In the dissolution of the monasteries the priory survived to some extent and there are still some of the original features in the house today, the pillars at the entrance to the garden are part of the priory church. The central portion of the house was built in the 16th and 17th century and the stone parts added in about 1860. The house was bought by the Chaworth–Musters family in 1822 although they did not occupy the property until 1973 when they sold the family home Annesley Hall which is located nearby. It was at this point that the work began in earnest on the lovely gardens. As the house sits in an elevated position, the thick yew hedges were planted to give shelter to the planned herbaceous borders. These borders are now spectacular in the summer months. The walled garden is awash with old fashioned roses and some more tender shrubs and plants are protected underneath the old Elizabethan walls. In the spring, the orchard is a sea of yellow, white and orange daffodils some of which are extremely rare. There is also a stunning display of bluebells at this time of year. You will find many of the plants on display in the on site nursery and a tasty selection of local produce in the tea rooms. Felley priory is conveniently located close to the M1 and simple to find in your Nottinghamshire motorhome rental. For further information, please click the blue link below.

Galleries of Justice

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Midlands

Whilst touring Nottingham and the East Midlands in a motorhome, why not take a trip to the Galleries of Justice in the heart of Nottingham city.

There are may exciting exhibitions on display at the museum and visitors can learn more about crime and punishment history in the UK.

The museum is situated in the historic Lace Market region of Nottingham city centre which dates back to 600AD when it was a Saxon settlement. Caves originating from this time are thought to be the beginnings of the first prisons.

The Galleries of Justice offer much more than just a history lesson, there are many exciting, engrossing and ever so slightly gruesome exhibitions and performances.

There are several well serviced park and ride services around Nottingham city centre making it even easier to explore without the worry over parking and driving in the city itself.

Harley Christmas Art and Food Market

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in England

A winter break with the family or just a couple can be a lot of fun if you combine your trip with some exciting events. Harley Christmas Art and Food Market is taking place on the weekend of the 26th November (10am till5pm) and 27th November (10am till 4.30am). It is a fabulous setting on the Welbeck Estate and this time for the first time ever, the Stable Court will be used and open for visitors to view and explore. This grand stable housed the fifth Duke of Portlands 96 horses and their grooms in 1860. There will be over fifty stalls all crammed with the best of British contemporary crafts for sale and on display. The food stall market is alive with fabulous cooking smells, sizzling food and bread and flour milled locally. The organic bread is made on the estate bakery. The artist studios are also open for viewing. The Harley Foundation artists work on the estate in their studios and you have the chance to meet and buy direct from the artists themselves. Even if you are not in a buying mood this is an exciting and interesting market to brouse. There has always been mulled wine to purchase in the past and I am hoping that this year will be no exception. The warm spicy smell wafts across the market stalls and gives the venue a truly festive flavour. If you are in Nottinghamshire during this weekend in November with your Nottinghamshire Motorhome Hire, this event is well worth a visit. For more details click the blue text below.

Laxton on May Day

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in England

Laxton is a village probably best known for its three field farming system which survived the Enclosures Act of 1845. Much of this can still be seen there today. A lot of people know about this, but less people seem to know about the annual May Day celebration held here on Laxton hill near the village. We have only managed to participate twice, and we have no excuse, because we live fairly local! The event is free, the problem is the time. You must be there on site to see the dawn rise, which is approximately 5.30am in the morning! Having a Nottinghamshire Motorhome hire close by could be the answer to an early start. Usually about 100 people turn up and the views are spectacular. From the hill you can see into Lincolnshire and seemingly endless countryside. On site this year were two troupes of Morris men and a great breakfast barbeque. A bacon cob or a sausage sandwich tastes the best eaten out of doors so early in the morning. Following a great deal of folk dancing, which invites audience participation, there is a guided wildlife walk around Laxton. By then it’s about 7.30am and most of us have woken up! Stuart Rose, a Laxton farmer, Clerk to the Gaits and Commons and trustee of the Visitor Centre leads the walk. He usually has with him one or two experts who point out birds and recognize species purely by their song. The guided walk given by Stuart Rose is free and takes a slow pace. If you don’t want to walk far Stuart will show you lots of short cuts that take you back to the village. You pass by the strips and roadways and the common land in the fields that are maintained through the ancient manorial court, known as the Court Leet. The village itself has a church, a popular pub, The Dovecote Inn, and the Laxton Visitor Centre. The Laxton Estate is owned by the Crown Estate and the agricultural land and associated farm houses are leased to 14 tenant farmers. It’s a lovely place to visit in your Nottinghamshire Motorhome Hire and particularly fun if you are an early riser on May Day at Laxton. For more information on the event and walk contact:

Southwell Folk Festival 9th -12th June 2011

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in England

The Gate to Southwell Folk Festival is one of the best folk festivals in Nottinghamshire and one of the midlands premier events. Taking place over the weekend of 9th to 12th June 2011 this is an event in which traveling in your Motorhome is ideal. You are never far from the action. The festival site is in a field next to the National Trust Workhouse just on the edge of this beautiful and historic city. Southwell is really the size of a town but because of its majestic and imposing cathedral is in fact a city. Here at the Folk festival is four days of stimulating and entertaining music and festivities. The line up of artists is extensive, far too many to name all here and there will be three stages with undercover seating. There are concerts, Ceilidhs, Real Ale and Cider Festival, Craft and Trade Stalls. There are also dance displays with many different teams of morris dancers and folk troupes performing throughout the festival days. There is also a procession through Southwell on 11th June. Midland Motorhome Hire vehicles can park overnight on the festival site for a fee but be aware that it is a grass field. If it rains then heavy vehicles may not get off wet ground without a tow. There is also no electric hook up etc. so the camping is very basic. It may be better to find a local camp site and drive in each day to the free car park if you like to ensure the luxury that you are used to in your Midland Motorhome Hire. Tea and Cakes in Mr Straws’ Orchard 2011

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in England

Visiting Mr Straws house is incredibly thought provoking. Visit on Saturday 2nd July 2011 and you have the additional attraction of tea and cakes in the orchard. Mr Straw finally lived alone here. His parents and brother died before him leaving him in a time warp. A house left unchanged since 1923. No radio, no television, no modern devises, Mr Straw kept everything as it was. Step back in time to the early 20th century and find out how this family lived in this market town. For 60 years the family threw little away and chose to live without many of the modern comforts we take for granted. Volunteers will describe in detail more about this unique family who made an extraordinary home in this ordinary house. Tea and cakes will also be available on 6 August 2011 11:00am and 3 September 2011 11:00am (normal admission charges apply. These events are being organised by the Friends of Mr Straw’s House and booking in advance is absolutely essential. If you are touring in your Midlands Motorhome Hire it is best to find parking on the road as the orchard is quite restricted for space and parking would be extremely difficult. Always remember to put a passenger down to assist you if you are required to reverse your Motorhome.

The actors you see on stage come from all over the local area and there is a strong history of successful past productions held at Clumber. Clumber Park is a beautiful place to spend the day if you arrive in your Midland Motorhome Hire. The best thing that you could do is to stay overnight in Clumber Park itself at the Clumber Park Caravan Club Site. Booking in advance is essential for this popular site, set as it is within the parkland. A visit to this outdoor theatre will be the highlight of your stay in the Park. The story itself is about Thomas, a discharged soldier, who announces he has committed murder and demands to be hanged. Officials believe he is not guilty. A young woman, is then brought before the Mayor for witchcraft. The Mayor’s family and friends gather for an impending wedding and seem to be stuck with the dilemma of two uninvited people, who may or may not be hanged in the morning. The tale then unravels and I will not spoil the experience by telling more of it. You must buy tickets and go yourself! Prices are advertised as follows for the play Adult £10 (Fri / Sat), Adult £8 (Wed / Thur), Concession £6 (Wed / Thur), Concession £8 (Fri).  The National Trust owns and runs Clumber Park. There is also an admission charge to the Park during the day but this is free to members of the National Trust. The Lady’s not for Burning is well worth seeing while you stay at the Park in the Clumber Park Caravan Club Site. It will make your stay in your Midland Motorhome Hire even more memorable.
