Alford Manor House

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Lincolnshire

alford-manor.jpg

Reputedly the largest thatched manor house in the country, Alford Manor House was built to a traditional H plan in 1611. It is a very rare example of a composite structure, featuring a wooden frame with reed and plaster (visible from within the house), encased in brick. Ground floor and first floor rooms feature design interventions from Georgian through to Victorian times, whilst the attic floor is virtually untouched since 1611.

Doddington Hall

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in England

Close to Lincoln is an impressive Elizabethan House, farmshop, café, restaurant and also an interiors shop. All are located at Doddington Hall which continues to be in one families private ownership. The hall is open to the public and the admission charge contributes a little to running the huge house. It’s a very elegant house that is home to interesting collections of porcelains, furniture, and everything you would expect of a large country home that has been lived in over a number of centuries. There are fascinating stories and information attached to some of the objects you will see. Outside, barns and stables have been converted to form an award winning café and farm shop. The farm shop has its own butcher selling rare breed meat on site plus many delicacies that one would expect to find in a quality delicatessen as well as locally grown fresh produce and flowers and herbs and local fresh bread. If you don’t want to cook yourself we can recommend the café and restaurant for its delicious cakes and meals provide a real treat. In the summer sunshine you can also sit outside on their patio courtyard area under a sun umbrella and enjoy your meals out of doors. They also run food events here, with taster sessions, and cooking demonstrations taking place. In October 2011 a new edition to their shopping complex was added with the opening of India Jane, an interiors and furnishing store. Give yourself plenty of time to visit the house, gardens and shops on site in your Lincolnshire Motorhome Hire as there is a great deal of interest here. Goltho Gardens

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in England

In 9 years the delightful Goltho garden has evolved from a 4.5 acre ploughed field into a truly stunning masterpiece of modern horticulture. It has even been referred to by gardening writers as one of Britain’s futures great gardens. The garden is divided into 5 key areas, each delightful and colourful in their own unique way. The potager or vegetable garden is truly productive and feeds a total of 3 families. It is laid out in traditional style and is well worth studying to see how a real working vegetable plot can be developed. From here you can have a look into the orchard which has a variety of fruit producing trees, this also acts as a home to a little flock of free range chickens; truly a taste of the “good life” in operation. As well as the practical and productive areas of the garden there are also areas which are purely planted to be pleasing on the eye. The rose garden is romantic and intimate, filled with heady scents and beautiful colours. The wild flower meadow which leads from the wooded area is awash with traditional grasses and old fashioned flowers and is blanketed with daffodils in the spring. Also of interest in the spring is the Nut Walk where you will find catkins, forget me knots and hellebores as well as more daffodils and other spring favorites. Later in the year the hazelnuts from the nut trees are used to make some lovely hazelnut confectionary in the tea rooms. If you visit the garden later in the season, the prairie garden consists of later flowering plants and wonderful ethereal grasses. Food in the tea shop is naturally sourced where possible in the potager garden and eggs are used from the free range hens. The lovely menu changes daily. So when traveling in your Lincolnshire motorhome rental, please pop in and visit these lovely gardens. For further information, please click the blue link below.

Grimsthorpe Castle

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in England

Grimsthorpe Castle is more of a large stately home than a castle, but it has been called a castle for over eight hundred years. It has been fortified but is now highly unlikely to have to defend itself against marauding hordes! It is not open on Fridays and Saturdays but from Sunday to Thursday you can gain entry to the castle from 1st April to 30th September between 1pm and 5pm. The last admission to the castle itself is 4pm so arrive in good time to have a look around. Admission to the Castle is by obligatory timed tours. Timed tickets are purchased from the gift shop prior to entering the castle. You can gain access to the gardens between 11am and 6pm on opening days. There is also opportunity to join a mini bus tour of the estate. This takes one hour and spaces are limited to 16 people per trip and there is a small charge per person. Tickets for the trip are also available for sale at the gift shop. If you are a keen cyclist the estate welcomes you to explore the family cycle trails on site. You can bring your own cycles with you if you have cycle racks on the back of your motorhome hire vehicle. Alternatively, cycles can be hired near the gift shop at Grimsthorpe Cycle Hire.  To cycle the full trail will take you along 9.6 miles of the estate but if you are with small children you may prefer shorter trails that avoid steep inclines and rough ground. You will find something to suit all requirements and free maps and safety helmets are provided. Cycle hire must be paid for with a valid credit or debit card, additional security will need to be provided if you are paying in cash. Bear in mind that you are not allowed to hand over your keys for your Lincolnshire Motorhome hire as security, as your motorhome insurance will not allow this. This is a stunning Lakeland Park that came out of private ownership in 1951, when it was sold to the Lincoln Corporation.  Most of the old Hall was demolished and the park was opened to the public. The Lake covers twenty five acres and was used to supply water to Lincoln reservoir. There is a great deal of wildlife to be found here for those who take their time to look so take binoculars for some bird watching. Walking the many paths around the lakes, surrounded as they are by spectacular mature trees and shrubs, is certainly a joy on any day of the year. This country park has the added advantage of having its own campsite. So you can pitch your Motorhome close to historic Lincoln City in fantastic scenic surroundings.  Travel to the main entrance to the Park on the B1378 (Skellingthorpe Road). It is signposted from the A46 (Lincoln Bypass) and from the B1003 (Tritton Road). If you want to take that all important visit to the city centre you are best advised to leave your Motorhome at the campsite as parking in the centre for a motorhome is non existent. Mablethorpe Camping and Caravanning Club Site

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in England

If you are traveling with your family on the east coast of Lincolnshire then Mablethorpe is a good location to use as a base. The campsite is a mile from the beach. There are several campsites around Mablethorpe and many in this area have large amounts of static caravans permanently on site. The reason for all this interest is the beach. The beach is a real bucket and spade beach with loads of glorious sand for building those sand castles! It’s a traditional Lincolnshire sea side town that has not changed much over the years. There is a small fairground, shops and plenty of fish and chip shops and cafes. Inland you will find the Fens and to the north the Lincolnshire Wolds, while to the east, that glorious beach boasts a Blue Flag for quality. The seafront has a sand train and traditional donkey rides. If fish and chips are not for you, you may prefer to cook for yourself in your Motorhome. Bennetts Butchers sells home-made pies, cooked meats and Lincolnshire sausages. It’s just a mile to the beachand shops. There is also a Seal Sanctuary nearby that cares for seals, both temporarily and permanently. Seals come to the beach at Donna Nook to give birth in the autumn. For more excitement the resort of Skegness is to the south. It has a Pleasure Beach and a museum of Lincolnshire rural life. If you are looking for a theme park then Fantasy Island in Ingoldmells has rides and amusements for all the family. To access the town in your Lincolnshire Motorhome Hire drive via the A1104 and A16 through Alford. If you are approaching from Louth on the A157 be aware that it is the sixth bendiest road in the UK! Pink Pig Farm

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in England

Pink Pig Farm is far more than your average farm shop; it is a complete experience for the entire family to enjoy. The owning family have worked the land here for almost one hundred years, consistently supplying quality food to the local community and they are also conscious that the food is reasonably priced and where possible organic. At the heart of the farm is the wonderful farm shop selling fresh food produced either on the farm itself or that made by fellow members of the Tastes of Lincolnshire group. The farm produces a wide range of meat and poultry which is sold in the shop as well as eggs and seasonal organic vegetables. Similarly, the produce is used in the friendly and comfortable café. Some of the must try dishes are the pink pigs sausages with delicious caramelized onion marmalade and don’t miss out on the desserts. Try Rhubarb and Orange cobbler or the Willingham Fayre ice cream. All absolutely delicious!  Once you have enjoyed the food or browsed the shops the little ones can have some fun time on the farms adventure trail. There are little tractors to ride on, zip lines to sail down, a fort to explore and sand pits and water play to get hands on with. But most of the children seem to enjoy getting to know the animals. They can collect eggs or ride on a farm trailer to see the pigs; there are also plenty of ducks, goats and guinea pigs to get friendly with. So when traveling in your Lincolnshire motorhome rental stop off at Pink Pig Farm, which can be accessed off the B1398 and has ample car parking for your vehicle. Rose and Sweet Pea Show 25th June 2011

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in England

If you are traveling through Lincolnshire and are close to Market Deeping on a fine weather day on 25th of June, then consider attending a traditional village garden fete. The Rose and Sweet Pea Show and Garden Fete will take place in June in the Church Hall Garden and in the Priory Church. This has everything you would expect in a small english village show and garden fete, competitions for displaying a variety of exhibits from a single rose to a vase or bowl of sweet peas as well as baking a cake. This is a relaxing event with highlights provided by local school children who will perform and finally the traditional crowning of the rose queen. Garden fetes always evoke images of scones, cakes and tea on the lawns and I imagine this event will be no exception to this. There is no better place to be on a sunny afternoon in the English countryside than to attend a garden fete. There is usually all the excitement of the tombola stand. This show can boast some outstanding prizes for its Grand Prize Draw including £100 cash, a £50 John Lewis token, meals at Maharanis in Deeping St James, Tolthorpe theatre tickets, a family ticket for Burghley House, a bird feeder and bird food from Vine Farm, a hanging basket from Swine’s Meadow, hampers and fish and chips! You could be returning to your Lincolnshire Motorhome Hire with a really excellent prize if you are a winner! Grand Draw tickets are already on sale at 50p each (£2 for a book of four) and will also be available to purchase on the day. There will be a car park marked but this may not be suitable for your Lincolnshire Motorhome Hire . The street in front of the Priory Church is very narrow so you are advised to park up in Broadgate Lane if you have space.

The Parrot Zoo

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Lincolnshire

Set in the heart of Lincolnshire you will find the most amazing collections of parrots in the UK. The Parrot Zoo set out to be a zoo and sanctuary solely for parrots but over the years the collection of animals has expanded to include meerkats, lemurs, marmosets and tortoises amongst others. But the main attraction really is the stunning collection of parrots on show. Many of the parrots have been rescued or rehomed here. In fact the zoo houses the largest collection of rehomed parrots in the UK. There are currently over 100 different types of birds with the collection totaling over 2000 individuals. There are some real characters amongst the birds and the dedicated staff does their best to develop and nurture these intelligent animals whilst at the same time allowing them to live as natural an existence as possible. The animal’s enclosures are designed to allow the birds as much freedom as possible and to allow them to make choices about where they want to be at different times in the day. For those who are extra shy, there is the opportunity to hide from visitors if they want to or for the extroverts there is plenty of opportunity to play to the audience. For those who are brave and like to get hands on with the animals there are snakes which can be handled, as well as other reptiles such as tortoises. Derren Brown is the Zoos proud patron and has been involved since 2004, he is a big parrot enthusiast, describing his birds as ‘toddlers who can fly’. To get to the Parrot Zoo in your Lincolnshire motorhome rental you take the A52 South from Skegness and follow the signs for Friskney. For further information, click on the blue link below.

Whisby Nature Reserve

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in England

Whisby Nature Reserve Park has hard surfaced footpaths that are suitable for wheelchairs and those with mobility difficulties. It is an excellent place to walk with many wooded and water areas to spot birdlife. The water areas were originally gravel pits but are now surrounded by so much greenery they cannot be identified as gravel pits. There are seven hides placed to overlook various lakes It is preferable if dogs are not taken on the nature reserve and please do not remove any plants or animals and follow the country code during your visit. Whisby Nature Reserve is located 7 miles south-west of Lincoln, on Moor Lane directly north of the village of Thorpe on the Hill, and signposted from the adjacent A46.  The entrance leads to the Whisby Natural World complex of buildings and car-parks.  Parking is charged at a rate of £1 per day (pay and display) between 10.00am and 4.00pm. Early visitors should purchase a ticket if they plan to be on site beyond 10.00am. Binoculars and electric wheelchair ‘buggies’ can be hired here too. The Nature Park comprises a complex of small, medium and large flooded gravel pits, which have now become ‘greened’ by up.  There are seven hides placed to overlook various lakes. It also has a gift shop and tea room that serves light meals. If you are touring in your Lincolnshire Motorhome Hire and enjoy tranquil places for walking and bird watching you are likely to enjoy Whisby Nature Reserve.

Woodhall Spa Camping and Caravanning Club Site

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in England

This is a lovely location for a campsite set within the woodland surrounded trees. The site has ninety pitches and all the usual facilities. The site itself is said to be a nature lovers dream having been awarded a gold conservation award. If you are lucky you could see grass snakes, woodpeckers, rabbits, many wild birds, so take binoculars and a book so that the children can identify what they see. Perhaps the real beauty of staying at the site is its proximity to Woodhall Spa itself. This is an amazing Edwardian town that has about it an air of a by gone age. I always feel it would make an ideal location for an Agatha Christie film! Whilst you are there you must find and go to the unique Kinema in the Woods, situated at the centre of the Pinewoods. This is a treasure. It is located next to the now derelict Spa Baths and opposite the site of the former Victoria Hotel. Housed in a converted cricket pavilion. It originally opened in 1922 it was one of the first cinemas in Britain. It is one of the few cinemas in the country to still employ back projection and also offers regular entertainment on an original Compton Captain Organ. Close to Woodhall Spa is Kirkby-on-Bain which was once home to an airfield in the Second World War. The old RAF base still has remnants of the military buildings on site, once occupied by the famous Dambusters Squadron. There are local shops ,cafes and places to eat in Woodhall Spa but this is essentially a quiet town and if you hanker for bright lights and nightlife action you are unlikely to find it here. This is a peaceful part of the countryside to take your Lincolnshire Motorhome Hire holiday.

Whilst travelling around Lincolnshire in a motorhome why not visit Woolsthorpe Manor, a 17th century manor house and birthplace of Sir Issac Newton.

There are free parking facilities, a small shop and refreshment centre on site to make sure that all visitors are well looked after during their stay.
