Anderton Boat Lift Visitor Centre

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Derbyshire

This is an amazing working structure, which is one of the few working boat lifts in the UK. The place is not just about lifting boats to another level as it now has cafe facilities for  that much needed cup of tea and cake! The boat lift is about twenty miles from Manchester Airport and three miles from Northwich. There is a car park fee which was £3 in 2011 but may be subject to change. It may be wise to call in advance of your journey to the Boat Lift to ensure parking is available for a Motorhome. The highlight of your visit to the Boat Lift will be a trip on an actual boat which takes you through the lift. Children particularly will love this adventure! The Edwin Clark trip boat makes the journey from the River Weaver to the Trent and Mersey Canal above. There is also a gift shop on site and an exhibition giving lots of information regarding the history and workings of the lift. Surrounding the lift is plenty of outdoor decking to view the structure and plenty of places to have your family picnic in fine weather. If you are traveling in your Manchester Airport Motorhome Hire take your family to view this majestic structure. More information can be obtained by clicking the blue text below.

Ashover Show Wednesday 10th August 2011

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Derbyshire

If you are enjoying a trip in the peak district in Derbyshire it can be made even more of a celebration by spending the day at Ashover Show on Wednesday 10th August 2011. This is a country show with something for the whole family to watch and enjoy. Originally started in 1924 this has a rich tradition of participation from local farmers and surrounding members of the community. There will be a horse show with show jumping, livestock classes on exhibition, light horse classes and a dog show. If you are more interested in mechanics, than animals you can indulge yourself in the displays of Vintage Tractors and Stationary Engines and vintage cars. All the family will be interested in food at some point and that’s when you need to steer them all to the large Food Marquee to sample the best of local produce. There is also a craft tent to view. You will be parking your Derbyshire Motorhome Hire on grass at the show which is fine if the ground is dry and hard. Just remember that you are a heavy front wheel drive vehicle and you will not be able to drive off soft or very wet ground. If the weather looks wet find hard standing for your Derbyshire Motorhome hire and walk or cycle to the show. Many hire vehicles have facilities for carrying your bikes on holiday. Bakewell Camping and Caravanning Club Site

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Derbyshire

Getting in and out of this campsite in Youlgreave, Derbyshire is not the easiest thing, as the road is very narrow. You have to be confident and very careful and then you can negotiate the narrow lane to the entrance and get to Bakewell Camping and Caravanning Club Site. This site has no toilet or showers so you will need suitable facilities in your motorhome. Only half of the site of a hundred pitches have electric hook ups so you may also have to use your leisure battery if you haven’t booked a hook up pitch. Once you arrive you are rewarded by the fantastic views across the valley to the surrounding hills around Youlgreave. There is also plenty of opportunity for local riverside and hill walking. If you are keen on watching television this is not the best site! There is very poor reception here and you may require a satellite dish to get a signal. Some of the pitches are sloping so you will need chocks to level up for a comfortable night’s sleep and your fridge to work effectively. This is a site for the more adventurous Derbyshire Motorhome Hire camper who wants to have peace and quiet and is prepared to do without all the facilities of a larger better equipped site. It is in a lovely location and not far from Bakewell itself. The site is open from the 1st April To 31st October 2011. Christmas Weekend in Matlock

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Derbyshire

The Matlock Victorian Christmas event is held annually on the first weekend in December. In 2011 the dates fall on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th from 10am to 6pm. It has a lovely Christmassy atmosphere and with over 150 stalls there is a stocking filler to suit most everyone. You don’t even need to worry about getting wet if the weather is bad as there are two marquees in which you can browse stalls selling different crafts and gifts as well as local produce. If you are taking little ones with you and they get bored of the shopping there are fairground rides and street entertainers to keep them amused as well as a Santa Parade and an extravaganza of Christmas lights. If you miss Santa during the parade, you can take the children to visit him in the grotto. On the Saturday evening the official switching on of the Christmas lights happens and is usually done by a local T.V personality followed by an excellent fire works display. If you are feeling peckish there is a selection of food stalls to peruse as well as a variety of different pubs and restaurants within the town itself. For those who have never visited Matlock, it is a picturesque town with plenty of sight seeing set within the beautiful Derbyshire Dales. You will certainly enjoy a drive through this beautiful scenic area in your Derbyshire motorhome hire. For further information on Matlock and the Christmas Fair, please click the blue link below.

Freshfield Donkey Village

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Derbyshire

The farm is open from March to end of October. Described as ‘The Actors Donkey Village’, this sanctuary has a host of famous actors who have either adopted a donkey or sponsored the farm in some way. There is quite an amazing history attached to this venue, as it apparently all began when John and Annie Stirling purchased two desperate donkeys at Chelford Livestock Market on the spur of the moment. They never looked back. After housing their donkeys in their garage, there followed a move to the Pictor Hall Estate and initial renovation by the ‘Anneka Rice’s Challenge’ TV programme. Pictor Hall Estate did not work out as a permanent home so’ with an ever increasing herd the project moved to Wormhill. June Brown the actress made famous for her role as Dot Cotton in Eastenders has since been the trusts president for eleven years. Following more adversity the trust finally settled, with the help of lottery funding, in its present location at Freshfield Farm. Take your Derbyshire Motorhome Hire to visit this remarkable place. With a tearoom recommended by Dame Judi Dench for afternoon or cream teas, the whole family is likely to enjoy the trip. Children particularly, will enjoy the donkeys themselves. Established now for 22 years the Freshfield Donkey Village  is set in the unique panoramic setting of the Derbyshire Peak District.

Hayfield Camping and Caravanning Club Site

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Derbyshire

This site is a haven for walkers, set as it is on the edge of the beautiful Peak District National Park. The site is located with rural views all around with gentle walks for the less active to more challenging climbs in the surrounding hills. Tents do predominate the site. Very recently in 2011 the site has added eighteen hard standing pitches with electric hook ups for motorhomes, no caravans allowed. The route into the site is quite tight through the village and not suitable for towing a caravan, but the average Motorhome will negotiate the route well. No motorhome over 23feet, (approximately 7m.) is allowed. Basic groceries can be purchased from the site shop including free range eggs from a local farm. In the village, The Sportsman pub provides food and serves locally-sourced meat on the menu. There are other pubs too which we haven’t tried or tested yet. The village is a fifteen minute stroll from the campsite down a footpath which is approximately three quarters of a mile away. Here you can find fruit and vegetable stalls, chemist, post office etc. There is also a fish and chip shop, newly opened in the village. There are also some great event weekends e.g. 17th and 18th September there is a local sheep dog trial, then there is crowning the May Queen and Well Dressing at other times in the year. If you want to attend an event then book well in advance for your campsite. This is an extremely popular site and booking your pitch for your Peak District Motorhome Hire well in advance is essential at most times of the year. The site is open from 1st April to 31st October and situated on the banks of the River Sett.

Kedleston Hall

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Derbyshire

Kedleston Hall, began its journey in 1760. It was the offspring of two like minded Italianate enthusiasts. The 1st Lord Scarsdale, then aged 32 and the Neo-Classical architect Robert Adam. Aged 30 and freshly returned from Italy with a head full of ideas inspired by the ancient world, Kedleston was Adams first major commission and stands today as a testament to his genius for designing an entire project. He took charge of all aspects of the commission from the architecture of the house itself to the interior design details and furnishings; even the landscaping of the parkland. The gilded furniture in the drawing room and the great state bed are said to be amongst the finest pieces designed by Robert Adam during his long and illustrious career. But perhaps Kedlestons most famous inhabitant  was George Nathaniel,Lord Curzon, Viceroy of India. His collection of Eastern gifts, which he received during his time in India provide a spectacular display in the Eastern Museum. One of the highlights of the collection is the ‘peacock’ ball dress worn by Lady Curzon to a spectacular event held during her husband’s term as viceroy of India. The dress is embroidered with thread of metal and jewels on a gold cloth to give it an iridescent sheen. It was widely reported on at the time of her wearing it. Although the house was bequeathed to the National Trust in the 1970’s, the Curzon Family still occupy one of the wings of the property today. If you find yourself near Kedleston in your Derbyshire motorhome hire, be sure you pay it a visit as it is impossible to come away from this spectacular property without feeling steeped in historical and architectural greatness. You may also recognize some of the rooms from the film The Duchess which was shot in part at the hall. For further information, click the blue link below.

Revolution House

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Derbyshire

This lovely Derbyshire stone cottage was originally a local pub or Ale house called the cock and Pynot. Pynot being the local term for a magpie! It was here in this unlikely spot that the seventeenth Century revolution was planned and plotted by three local wealthy noblemen. The Earl of Devonshire from the Chatsworth Estate along with The Earl of Danby and Mr John D’Arcy met here to plan the overthrow of King James 11. Their plotting led to a chain of events that was to see William and Mary of Orange placed in power. This is a small discreet place in which plans were made three hundred years ago that would result in unrest across the nation. It all started here in the village of Whittington. The cottage is still filled with country furniture from the period. They also have a film that visitors can watch that gives more information about these crucial events. Upstairs is an exhibition room with an interesting local displays. The house ois open from April till 25th September and entry in 2012 is currently free. It is only open to the public on fridays, saturdays, sundays and Bank Holidays, from 11am till 4pm, so plan your visit accordingly. If you are traveling from the M1, exit at junction 29 and take the A617 four miles to Chesterfield. Keep in the right hand lane at the roundabout and take exit 4. At the traffic light controlled roundabout near Tesco take the 2nd exit onto the A61. Take the fourth exit again when you reach the Little Chef roundabout. You are now heading towards Eckington on the B6025. Half a mile along this road turn left into Church Street North, then right into the high street. Revolution House will be on your left opposite the Swanick Memorial Hall. The Workhouse may well have inspired the writers of this piece, as it tells the stories of seven people forced by circumstance to enter the dreaded workhouse of the 19th century. Finally they escape its clutches so it does have an uplifting ending. If you are on holiday in your Derbyshire Motorhome hire take along your freestanding chairs from your garage storage area in the Motorhome.
