Bateman’s, the beautiful home of Rudyard Kipling was much loved both by the author and his family. It is said that when he first saw the house he wanted to buy it and make an ‘honest woman’ of it and had loved it from first sight. It had no electricity or water upstairs, but the author was impressed by its originality and its peaceful atmosphere. The rooms in the house remain much as the author and his family left them in the ‘untouched and unfaked’ manner that Kipling had so admired in the property. The interior reflects Kipling’s long association with the East and contains many oriental rugs and artifacts. For the literary enthusiast the book filled study gives an opportunity to experience the atmosphere that a great writer enjoyed and worked in. The Kipling’s carried out a lot of work in the beautiful gardens. Some of the planting such as the avenue of limes is from before his time at the house, but the rose garden encircled by a yew hedge was designed and created by Kipling and paid for from the proceeds of the prize money he won for the Nobel Prize. Having lost one daughter at the age of 6 to pneumonia and his eighteen year old son in the first world war, Kipling and his wife were survived by just one daughter. The house had been bequeathed to the National Trust upon the death of his wife. His daughter Elise was to have no children and went on to bequeath her copyrights to the National Trust upon her death in 1976. If you fancy a peaceful, historic and interesting day out in your Sussex motorhome hire, you will find a visit to Kipling’s beautiful house Bateman’s, both enjoyable and fascinating. Set in the middle of the beautiful South Downs, Bignor Roman Villa is the spectacular remains of a Roman home and includes some of the best Roman mosaic floors to be uncovered in such intact condition. The heated hypocaust floor allowed the wealthy Romans to live in warmth and luxury in the cold British temperatures. It is thought that the villa comprised some 65 rooms surrounding a courtyard and was clearly a home of some significance. It is believed that this wealth and importance was probably derived from farming which would have in likelihood supplied the Roman city of Chichester situated near by. The site has been visited by people since 1811 when the local farmer struck the fountain in the summer dining room with his plough. Indeed the site still belongs to descendents of the farmer, George Tupper to this day. At the time of the discovery in the Georgian era the visitors began to appear at the site to gaze at the marvels which were being unearthed from the soil. It was during this period that the thatched buildings were erected to protect the Roman remains and today the buildings are considered of historical importance in their own right. Bignor farm is still a working enterprise run by the Tupper family who produce lamb as well as a variety of arable crops. They remain dedicated to preserving the history and ecology of this beautiful National Park area. You will find Bignor in your Sussex motorhome hire 15 minutes south of Petworth and Pulborough and approximately 20 minutes North of Chicester. If you were to imagine the perfect romantic, fairytale, moated castle, then it would definitely be Bodiam Castle that you would envisage. Built in 1385 as both a defensive keep and a comfortable home the exterior of the castle is almost as complete as the day it was built and still retains its original wooden portcullis. The castle was built by Sir Edward Dalyngrigge with the permission of the King to act as a defense against the French during the Hundred Years War. It passed through the generations of this old family until the Wars of the Roses when the family line ceased and the Castle was inherited by the Lewknors. By the Civil war it was owned by another family and their affiliations with the monarchy forced the castle to be sold to pay off fines. It was left for nearly 200 years as a beautiful ruin until being bought by a John Fuller in 1829. He began to restore the property before it was again sold and finally came into the possession of Lord Curzon who ultimately bequeathed Bodiam to the National Trust upon his Death in 1925. Today you can explore the castle and all its turrets, spiral stair cases and battlements and enjoy the spectacular view from on high. When traveling in your Sussex motorhome hire it is well worth a visit to this lovely Medieval Castle. There are often special events and activities on at the Castle so it is well worth checking up before you drop in. Henry VIII used Bolebroke Castle as his hunting lodge when he visited Sussex and hunted for boar and venison in Ashdown Forest. It was here that he began his courtship of Anne Boleyn who lived with her parents at the nearby Hever Castle. The house is the earliest made from brick in Sussex and has some excellent rooms with the original beams and oak paneling. Many believe the carved oak Elizabethan staircase is one of the finest of its era. There is an interesting audio tour of the property with costumed figures of members of the household. You will learn what life was like for the servants in the kitchens as well as for the nobility above stairs. There is a secret priest hole where Catholics would have hidden from the Kings men and a little cupboard which housed the Kings chamber pot! Children and adults alike will love the miniature railway which runs around the lovely lake. There are different types of locomotives, about 20 in total, some electric, others steam or diesel. If you or the children are fans of Winnie the Pooh, you will find that you are right in the heart of Pooh country and can take a tour from the castle to Ashdown Forest, otherwise known as the Hundred Acre Wood and visit some of the special places loved by the characters in the books including the famous ‘Poohsticks’ bridge. There are very often special events being hosted at the castle, so it is well worth checking in advance to see if there is anything going on that you might be interested in when traveling in your Sussex motorhome rental. If you love wandering around other peoples gardens, Borde Hill Garden should be on your list of places to visit. It is a glorious and great garden with lots of garden rooms, lovely views across parkland, champion trees and tranquil pond, potting sheds and rare species of plants. In fact there is a great deal here to delight the keen gardener. If gardening is not your thing, then just looking around at other peoples endeavors to create this stunning place is certainly worth while. Take a visit whilst in your Sussex Motorhome Hire Holiday and on a really fine day the scents and smells as well as the visual experience will be well worth the journey. Planting here was often as a result of expeditions from 1893 to 1937 and the current family continues to add new plants. Four whole days of craning your neck to the sky’s to watch amazing flying led by the iconic Red Arrows with the Royal Air Force, Royal Navy, British Army and civilian aircraft. As well as the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight, The Blades, Breitling Wingwalkers and many more will be wowing the crowds with spectacular displays. If gazing into the sky’s becomes too much for the family then the western lawns will have displays and demonstrations in the arena at ground level plus concerts. Entertainment does not stop in the evenings with a varied programme of events culminating in a grand finale firework display. This event is incredibly popular so use the park and ride facilities or park well out of town with your Motorhome hire holiday transport and either walk in or take public transport. Further details plus car park arrangements are on their website. High Beeches was originally the family seat of the Loder family, who lived and gardened at this beautiful site. This famous gardening family is known for their association with other great English gardens such as Kew and Leonardslee. Colonel Giles Loder was an exceptional gardener in his day and many of his original plants still survive in the garden. Many such specimens were brought from the far corners of the globe when plant hunting exhibitions could prove to be extremely dangerous and High Beeches was proud to display many of the finest plant specimens from all over the world. In the last 50 years, the garden has been owned by the Boscawen/Bray family who are themselves knowledgeable horticulturalists and have been involved in overseas plant exhibitions and as judges within the horticultural society. Set in an area of outstanding natural beauty the garden itself appears to have evolved naturally when in fact it has been meticulously designed to create this stunning landscape. The wildflower meadow is of particular note and is managed in a specific way to preserve its rich eco-system. It has never been ploughed or cultivated and is only cut once a year with the cuttings allowed to lie on the ground for days to ensure that the seeds fall before the cuttings are removed. Of course the garden is beautiful all year round, but the daffodils are a particular attraction in spring and the Bluebells in early May. When traveling in your Sussex motorhome hire it is definitely worth a visit to High Beeches Gardens, there is a tea room where lunches and snacks are available or if you want to take a picnic there is a delightful area available to visitors. Monks House was the country retreat of Virginia Woolf and her husband Leonard. For many years it was used as a holiday home by the couple, but following a bombing raid during the Second World War which saw their London house damaged, the couple took up permanent residence at Monks house. Over the years the couple upgraded the cottage from the primitive house it had been upon purchase, to a more comfortable home with hot water and a bathroom, but it still retained its weatherboard charm and lovely gardens. They also purchased an adjoining field to ensure they retained the beautiful views that the house enjoyed. The house is full of the whispers of the famous author considered by many to be the finest of her era and her artistic and creative family. There are many pieces of furniture painted by her sister Vanessa and the walls are hung with the art works of members of her family circle. The house is filled with the echoes of the famous literary and artistic figures who visited the house. These included T.S Elliot and E.M Forster. There were many members of the Bloomsbury group, which the sisters had founded with their brother Thoby in London prior to his death, to visit Monks house. Virginia is often sadly remembered for her fragile mental health which resulted in her death by suicide in the nearby River Ouse, but it is also fitting to remember the beautiful literary works that she created, many of them here at Monks house. You will find Monks House in your Sussex campervan hire in Rodmell village itself near to the church and only 4 miles to the South of Lewes. This is a large campsite with all the usual facilities that one expects in a campsite of this size including a small launderette. There is a road between the campsite and the beach. The beach at Normans Bay is a pebble beach which only reveals its sand at low tide and a railway line runs alongside one side of the site. The site is very open and if the weather is windy it can seem very windy for those of you camped there! The Pevensey Levels is an agricultural area known for nature conservation. It has a well stocked shop on site and a fish and chip van goes on site on Saturdays. The local baker delivers fresh rolls, croissants and pastries to the Site shop every day. There are several farm shops in the area. It’s about a mile and half walk, for you are fit and active campers, to Pevensey Bay where you can find Pevensey Castle. It is one of Britain’s oldest strongholds. You will also find plenty of shops and a supermarket. Eastbourne is a short drive away with a Miniature Steam Railway Adventure Park, which will keep your children amused. It also includes a five-acre fishing lake and trains of several sizes. There cant be many adults out there who don’t have fond memories of reading the Winnie the Pooh books as children or as grown ups telling the stories to their own little ones. Like many good works of literature the AA Milne books were based largely upon reality and are the retelling of the imaginings of his young son Christopher Robin and his life growing up in Hartfield near the beautiful Ashdown Forest. Of course many of the places in the stories do really exist, most notably the ‘poohsticks’ bridge which still stands proud today. Pooh Corner is a shop in Hartfield Village that is dedicated to bringing to life the tales of Winnie the Pooh, it was infact the shop where the young Christopher Robin and his nanny would go to buy bulls-eye sweets, today the shop is dedicated to bringing ‘Pooh-phernalia’ to fans of the little yellow bear. Piglet also has his very own tea room with lots of lovely treats if you are feeling peckish either before or after you go off to explore Pooh country. From the shop you can set off on your very own Winnie the Pooh adventure and visit the real location of many of the sites made famous by the books including Roo’s Sandy Pit and the Heffalump Trap not forgetting of course the Poohsticks bridge. You will find Pooh Corner in your Sussex campervan rental in the heart of the village of Hartfield, from the shop you can embark on your tour of nostalgia. The famous battle of Hastings took place on 14th October 1066. The 2011 Battle will be taking place on 15th and 16th October over the weekend! This of course is a reenactment so all the glory and spectacle without the blood and gore! Taking place between 10am and 4pm this is as civilized as battles get and hopefully no one gets hurt in the process. Originally fought between the Norman Army of Duke William of Normandy and the English Army of King Harold the reenactment will have soldiers representing both armies. The battle was fought at Senlac Hill, six miles northwest of Hastings close to the village of Battle in East Sussex. If you are touring Sussex in a motorhome then why not take a visit to The Royal Pavilion, a former royal residence situated in Brighton.
Dating back to the early 19th century, The Royal Pavilion offers a plethora of lavishly decorated rooms. Asian design influences much of the palace and is reflected in the choice of carvings and daring colours.
Banquets and music events are held at the Pavilion on a regular basis and are well worth experiencing.

West Dean Gardens must be a paradise for gardeners and a delight for all the family to visit. There is everything here you could wish for in gardens, sunken gardens, park land gardens, walled gardens, vegetable and fruit gardens and much much more. This garden is recognised as having national importance and it is truly a living treasure of plants and planting. On a lovely sunny summers day strolling around thiscolourful place, taking in the scents and sights will be a welcome experience. When you are there look out for the two fibreglass tree sculptures. These were created around existing rotting trees, the tree has since rotted away leaving the encased fibreglass behind. A ghost tree that bears the original bark markings of its once living host. A team of gardeners work full time on the gardens and it also includes many volunteers all working to maintain the gardens in tip top condition. There is a garden shop and cafe on site as well as galleries exhibiting local art works. The gardens are not open every day so check and plan your visit prior to setting out.If you are planning alterations to your garden at home West Dean Gardens are likely to inspire you to greater heights!
