Aldridge Hill Caravan and Camping Site

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in England

This is an extremely basic campsite with no toilet facilities, no hook up and no showers and no hard standing. If the weather is wet avoid camp sites with no hard standing as your Motorhome may require assistance to get off wet soft ground. Your Motorhome is a heavy front wheel drive vehicle not designed for soft ground. Its best to ask the site manager if the ground is suitable. However, if the weather is good and you have hard dry ground then camping here is an adventure worth risking for the spectacular views alone. Here, you will find free roaming ponies, cattle and donkeys! The site is on level ground in a heathland clearing, and is bordered by Blackwater Stream and Ober Water. Brockenhurst is just two miles from the site, with a mini supermarket; a gas and camping supply shop; and several little cafes. Brockenhurst is very beautiful too with some interesting architecture and shops. The campsite is open from 26th May to 5th September 2011 and there is space for two hundred pitches. Your Hampshire Motorhome Hire leisure battery will give you lighting and power over night before recharging is required. The site is well located for touring to the nearby attractions, which include Furzey Gardens (which has a rare plant collection,) Longdown Activity Farm, The New Forest Reptile Centre, The New Forest Wildlife Park and the National Motor Museum. Gilbert Whites House and Garden

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Hampshire

Gilbert Whites House is the home of the man dubbed the ‘first ecologist’. He is the man responsible for writing one of the most published books in the English language, ‘The Natural History and Antiquities of Selbourne’. This book began as a discussion between White and some like minded contemporaries’ intent on the study of local flora and fauna. White was an unusual scientist for his day, he believed in the observation of creatures in their natural habitat where as most naturalists of this era were more intent on the study and dissection of dead specimens. This new approach of White’s lead him to discover some of the sub species of birds mainly distinguishable by their unique bird song. He was also the first to accurately describe the harvest mouse and the noctule bat. Gilbert had moved to the house, called The Wakes as a child and there is much memorabilia available from the time that he lived here as well as importantly the original manuscript of his now renowned book. But it  was the beautiful garden here that was of great importance to White. He loved to experiment in the garden with different methods of growing various fruit and vegetables, being the first in the area to grow potatoes. He went on to record all the varying factors which affected the success of the plants growth such as the weather and temperature. The lovely dining room here is now a fabulous tea room where you can enjoy a variety of  homemade cakes and teas as well as a light lunch. The gift shop has some lovely items on sale  including copies of Gilbert Whites famous book. If you find yourself near Selbourne in your Hampshire motorhome hire, it is well worth a visit to this lovely ‘home of  bird watching’. Houghton Lodge Gardens

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Hampshire

Houghton Lodge is a delightful 18th Century house set in a peaceful and beautiful location on the banks of the picturesque River Test. The lovely Gothic style cottage was built as a rural retreat and followed the fashion for the wealthy to have a rustic style cottage in which they could escape form the formality of their great houses into something more cosy and quaint.  The lodge is designed to sit harmoniously within the beautiful grounds and to have plenty of open access to the garden through French windows and conservatories. It is not clear who designed the house, but it is widely thought to be the work of John Nash on behalf of the Pitt-Rivers family. You may even find the house familiar as it has been used on many occasion as a film location. You can visit the house by appointment, but the lovely gardens are the main visitor attraction with different areas to visit and lawns that sweep down to the winding River Test. The informal garden is a fine example of the ‘natural style’ adopted in the Georgian era. There is a splendid herbaceous border with year long interest, from bulbs in spring, a variety of favourites in the summer and some lovely Dahlias in the autumn. If you are a lover of topiary you will definitely be enchanted by the gorgeous peacock garden which has a variety of topiary sculptures and a dragon topiary which bellows steam! Don’t miss the kitchen garden which is both beautiful and productive. If you wish to wander further through the gardens, you can visit the flock of alpacas, or if the weather is inclement, you can browse in the green houses and hydroponicum and see how plants are grown without soil; amongst these you will find a stunning collection of orchids. It is definitely worth visiting this lovely place when traveling in your Hampshire motorhome hire. For further information on opening times please click the blue link below.

Jane Austen’s House Museum

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Hampshire

You have seen the films, you have read the books, now its time to visit the house. The Jane Austen House Museum in Chawton is a must for all lovers of Jane Austen and there are definitely a lot of you out there. This absolutely charming house is where Jane spent the last eight years of her life and is also the location of where she wrote many of her later works. Tragically Jane left the house to seek medical help in Winchester and died a few months later a young woman by today’s standards at only 41. Jane lived in the house with her sister Cassandra and her mother and was part of a close knit family, often being visited by her young nieces and nephews at the property. At Chawton, Jane would spend time playing the piano and making up stories to entertain the young members of her family, indeed it is said that she would play for up to 2 hours a day and was an accomplished pianist. Within the house you will find objects that Jane would have used on a daily basis including her writing desk and pieces of her jewelry along with manuscripts and music books. The house at Chawton represents a settled time in the life of Jane Austen after unsettled periods living in Bath and Southampton, arriving at the cottage, a gift from her brother Edward, allowed Jane the peace to prepare many of her early works for publication as well as to write new stories. Some of these works are thought to represent the village life and tranquility that she found at Chawton. If you are a lover of literature and find yourself near Chawton in your Hampshire motorhome hire be sure to visit the cottage and this lovely village. Opera at West Green House Hampshire 2011

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in England

Combining one of Britains great country house and garden with an opera with star artists performing, can only guarantee a sumptuous indulgent evening. Add to this a picnic in the gardens in one of  the prebooked picnic venues and you have an evening that is quintessentially British. Rivaling Glynebourne, this is smaller, but not in any way less, in terms of quality of performance, or the beautiful location West Green House is a manor house to admire. Here you find the busts of Gods and Emperors surveying you from their niches high in the house’s façade looking out to the walled garden and the classical lakes and follies beyond. Only within a twenty mile radius of Guildford, Farnham, Basingstoke, Reading, Farnborough and Camberley and only 55 minute drive from London the venue is easily accessible in your London Motorhome Hire.  If you would just love to visit the gardens without going to the opera, they are open Saturday 23 April to Sunday 18 September on Wednesdays, Saturdays, Sundays, 11.00am to 4.30pm. They do an amazingly posh cream tea for £15 if you want to treat yourselves. However, the real splendor of the occasion  has got to be when you go to see the opera as well. Tickets cost from £89 . There is Don Giovanni on 30th and 31st July and The Merry Widow on 6th and 7th August 2011. Booking tickets well in advance is essential. Further information is available by clicking on the blue text for West Green Gardens. Paultons Theme Park

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in England

If you are traveling in the New Forest area, and you feel your journey has been rather uneventful and tranquil, that could all change, with a visit to Paultons Theme Park. Be prepared for some very scary and outrageous rides. Some of these rides are not for the faint hearted, but even the most disgruntled teenager is bound to find these rides exhilarating. On the Edge, is a ride in which you are strapped to a huge disc that swoops, spins and seems to float and can be thoroughly stomach churning. Then there is the Cobra rollercoaster which has the addition of drops, spins spirals and turns. If your nerve holds out, there are many more rides to try. It is advisable to eat your fish and chips after the children have ridden the main rides! My favourite ride would have to be the Raging River Ride Log Plume, you hit the water with a really big splash. Bring a dry shirt to change into! For prices and admission opening times check before you set out. To get best value for money you need to go early in the day as buying tickets for the entire family will not be cheap. Your New Forest Motorhome Hire holiday will certainly be a memorable one if you included a day at Paultons Theme Park.

Royal Victoria Country Park

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in England

There surely is no better spot for a stroll and a seat in the sunshine than in the Royal Victoria Country Park. With far reaching views across Southampton water, sailing boats on the horizon it can be extremely relaxing. Follow the brown tourist signs from junction 8 off the M27 or A27 to get there. There is a reasonable car parking charge. This was once the site of a military hospital and conditions were terrible. Queen Victoria heard of the awful conditions that men were treated and suffered in and felt compelled to help. In 1856 she rallied support and the hospital was renovated. The hospital has a rich and interesting history that can be viewed in the Heritage Visitor Centre at the Park. It is well worth taking the family as it is extremely educational. On a much lighter note, you may need a cup of tea! The Cedar Tea-rooms will be just the place and you can also hire a BBQ in a scenic location (booking in advance is advisable). Whilst visiting Royal Victoria Country Park you want to give the children a treat with a ride on the miniature railway. It is an interesting spot to stop and browse if you in the locality with your Southern England Motorhome Hire.

Southampton Airport Motorhome Hire

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Hampshire

Southampton airport is one of Europe’s most advanced regional airports with over a million passengers flying annually to over 33 destinations in the UK and mainland Europe.

Stoneham Farm in 1917 was requisitioned by the War Office to build hangars to conciliate men from the US Navy who were getting into the country to support the war effort. The bare site was afterwards given to the US Navy to be utilised as a presenting area for bombing operations in Northern Europe.

At the end of World War I the site was absorbed by shipping companies, it wasn’t until 1932 when Southampton Corporation bought Atlantic Park that the site was explicated into Southampton Municipal Airport.

The base was celebrated for the maiden flight of the prototype Spitfire K5054 aviated by Captain Joseph Summers in March 1936. The Spitfire and Hurricane became legendary aircraft for representing the UK in the Battle of Britain.

Spitfires where planned and assembled at nearby Woolston and built and tested at the airbase.

After the war the airport commenced to provide regular services to the Channel Islands.

In the 1960′s the airport was bought by Mr J. N. Somers, who enacted numerous betterments to the site, including a fresh 1723 metre concrete runway.

In the 1970′s despite a decrease in passenger numbers a new tower building was manufactured.

In the 1990′s BAA purchased the airport and made many developments including two new business parks, and the modernisation of the terminal buildings. The “New Southampton Airport” was reopened in 1994 by HRH the Duke of York.

Stansted Park

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Hampshire

Over 800 years ago the story of Stansted Park began with a hunting lodge in a forest near the Hampshire Coast. The property has seen various families within its walls and in 1900 suffered a catastrophic fire which resulted in the current house having to be rebuilt on the original footprint of the 17th century house. In 1924 the estate became home to Earls of Bessborough with Lord Bessborough being responsible for the  book ‘The Enchanted Forest’ which tells the story of this beautiful park since the 12th century. Sweet chestnut has been managed in this forest for years with  the wood being traditionally used for fencing stakes. Get a real ‘Downton Abbey’ experience in the below stairs servants quarters where you will get a true feel for traditional life working in a big country mansion. There are plenty of safe footpaths throughout the estate which can be explored. There is the  lovely Pavillion tea room where you can enjoy lunch as well as various shops to visit, including a Pottery Studio  selling some creative ceramics and textiles. There are also various workshops where both children and adults can have a hands on experience. If pottery is not  your thing then, you may well be tempted by the chocolate crafting studio. Here you can make a variety of luxury chocolates and share the experiences of the chocolatier. Better still you will have a lovely chocolate momento which you can enjoy later on in your Hampshire motorhome hire. The Vyne

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Hampshire

The Vyne  has a long and interesting history that began in the reign of Henry VIII. It was built for the infamous monarch’s Lord Chamberlain, Lord Sandy’s. It became home to the Chute family for in excess of 300 years. Over the centuries the various descendents  residing within the house have developed the property to match the tastes of the day. All the furniture within the property has belonged to the house and been collected over time and was included in the gift to the National Trust. The Portico on the building is thought to be the first of its kind on a private house in England and shows the family’s habit for being at the cutting edge of all things fashionable down the centuries. The chapel  was said to be the finest chapel not belonging to a royal household  in the whole of Tudor England, with stained glass windows to rival those commissioned by Henry VIII. A day out at The Vyne is about more than just the magnificent house as the grounds contain large woodlands and wetlands, with a large swan nesting site. There are various nature trails across the parks for all to enjoy. Whilst in the grounds you will note the domed summer house, thought to be the earliest built in England. Over time this lovely building has had various uses including  a banqueting house, a dovecote and a ‘lust’ house! Look out for the Hundred Guinea Oak tree said to be over 600 years old which one member of the Chute family refused to sell for wood for the princely sum of 100 guineas. Winchester Cathedral

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in England

Hampshire is a great county to explore in a campervan. Whilst in the area why not take a trip to Winchester Cathedral which dates back to the 7th century.

Based on the Benedictine monks’ open hospitality at Winchester Cathedral (then known as St Swithun’s Priory), today the venue offers a high quality dining experience for all visitors and is the ideal location for a reception, conference or banquet. In addition to this the stunning architecture and internal displays are on offer all year round along with regular congregational services.

Winchester Cathedral was even used as one of the filming location for the Hollywood hit The Da Vinci Code (2006), which starred Tom Hanks and is based on the bestselling novel by Dan Brown.
