Boarstal Duck Decoy

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Buckinghamshire

The Boarstal Duck Decoy will provide you with a fascinating day out in the beautiful Buckinghamshire countryside as well as giving an insight into how the trapping methods of the past can be used today as a positive conservation tool. A duck decoy was quite a common sight in the 17th century. The gentry who favoured duck as a table bird, were loathe to spoil the meat by shooting the animal and thus leaving pellets lodged within the meat. Instead a special decoy or ‘trap’ was constructed to tempt the ducks into a small patch of water. A fake duck would attract any passing waterfowl which would land in a small pond and which would then be channeled along a long conical wickerwork tunnel where the bird could then be caught as required. A decoyman would be employed to direct the birds into the tunnel with the help of a dog. Today Boarstal Duck Decoy is one of only four of its kind in the UK. Regular demonstrations are held for visitors to observe the art of using the decoy. Of course today the poor unsuspecting ducks are not served up as dinner. They are instead ringed, studied and released. Boarstal is now an important roosting and nesting site for a large variety of wildfowl and the woodland which surrounds the decoy hosts a diverse variety of wildlife. Over forty species of bird have been recorded at this location as well as 3 deer types. Visitors can enjoy the nature trail that runs through the woodland and around the pond. You will find Boarstal in your Buckinghamshire motorhome hire in between Bicester and Thame and 2 miles west of the village of Brill. For further information please click the blue link below.

Jools Holland with Sandie Shaw 24th June

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Buckinghamshire

Wow! Get yourself down to Waddesdon Manor near Aylesbury in Buckinghamshire for a fantastic night out. A concert in the gardens of this amazing place is brilliant at the best of times but Jools Holland and his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra featuring Gilson Lavis with special guest Sandie Shaw and guest vocalists Ruby Turner & Louise Marshal make it incredible! I went to see a Jools Holland Concert last year in the grounds of Belvoir Castle and it exceeded my expectations. Jools has so much energy and his performance was electric! Well worth going to see live in concert. Set against the backdrop of this renaissance-style château this sounds a perfect opportunity. The gates open at 6.30 and the concert begins at 8.30. Arrive early in your London Motorhome Hire and picnic. Tickets cost; adults £35.00, children £20.00 and it will certainly be memorable. Book in advance by going onto the Waddesdon Manor website, and getting further details. Just visiting the garden is a treat in itself as Waddesdon has one of the finest Victorian gardens in Britain, famous for its Parterre, seasonal displays, shady walks and views, fountains and statuary. The garden is renowned for its innovative planting schemes and restoration of major victorian features such as three-dimensional carpet bedding. Look out for the small but important collection of contemporary sculpture in the garden. Your holiday in your London Motorhome Hire with certainly be made special if you include this concert and venue in your trip.

The Hell Fire Caves

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Buckinghamshire

These very ancient and unique caves were extended in the 1740’s by the infamous Sir Francis Dashwood, founder of the notorious Hellfire Club. He was an extraordinary man and his garden certainly reflects that. He had the idea to extend the caves and build underground as a meeting place to impress his friends who attended meetings of the hell fire club. His friends were wealthy aristocrats who owned great Estates and were spending vast amounts of money landscaping gardens and temples above ground. He was the only one to venture underground in this way as an amazing and unique garden feature. The chalk was used to build the main road from West Wycombe to High Wycombe. This also provided employment to the Villagers of West Wycombe following a succession of harvest failures. The tunnels were all dug by hand and you can still see the individual pick axe marks on the walls. These tunnels extend for over half a mile, through the great Banqueting Hall and past various chambers. There is more to see inside so do not expect just tunnels!  The Inner temple is actually several hundred feet below the Church on top of the hill. The entrance was designed to look like a Gothic church to be seen from West Wycombe Park. Visiting the Hell Fire Caves is not to be missed if you are touring through Buckinghamshire as part of your Motorhome Hire holiday. Check opening times and admission prices prior to setting off.
