Africa Alive

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Norfolk

Experience Africa in the heart of Norfolk, at this fabulous animal attraction. You will enjoy a fabulous walking safari set within fabulous coastal parkland and experience the sights, sounds and smells of the African content right here on the East coast. There are hundreds of African animals and birds including lions, giraffes, cheetas and rhinos. Inside the kingdom of the lion you can enjoy a birds eye view of the kings of the jungle going about their daily routine and there is a chance to observe the lions as well as other animals throughout the park at feeding time. If you don’t feel like walking around the park, you may prefer to take the roadtrain and enjoy the live commentary that you will receive on your way round. Once the little ones have seen all the wild animals they will be able to have a much more up close and personal experience with some more domesticated creatures. The Farm Yard Corner has lots of friendly animals which the children can handle. Perhaps not quite as exciting as the lions, but a far safer option! There are plenty of places to eat throughout the park and the gift shop has a wide variety of toys and gifts. There are lots of special events which take place at the safari park so it is well worth checking on line before you visit to see if there is anything special on. Blickling Estate

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in England

Blickling Hall has a long and illustrious history but its most famous association is with Boleyn family who occupied the Hall between 1499 and 1505. It is known that the two eldest Boleyn children were born at the Hall, but it is debated whether Anne was born here or at their next home Hever Castle in Kent. However popular myth believes that a headless Anne returns to Blickling in a horse and carriage driven by a headless driver every year on the date of her execution, carrying her head with her of course. The house that stands on the site today is not however the one that was occupied by the Boleyn family. The present property was built on the ruins of the old house by Sir Henry Hobart and was designed by the famous architect Robert Lyminge. During World War II the house acted as an officers Mess and at the end of the war was de-requisitioned and let to tenants until the 1960’s when the National Trust began restoration work on the building. The gardens at Blickling are particularly lovely with gorgeous views out over the lake. There is a lakeside walk that takes about an hour and passes around the entire perimeter of the lake. There is a pleasant wooded area that the children will enjoy. It is not unusual to see barn owls flying near the lake even in the daytime hours. You will be amazed at the size of the yew hedges on the approach to the house which are over 400 years old. If you are traveling in your Norfolk campervan rental it is definitely worth a visit to the Blickling Estate, there is a lovely café and garden centre as well as second hand book shop full of bargains. Felbrigg Hall, Gardens and Estate

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Norfolk

Felbrigg Hall is often described as one of Norfolk’s hidden gems. It is a barely altered 17th century house with 18 rooms open to the public. Some lavish and stately, others more homely and cosy, its architecture is a fine example of the Jacobean period whilst its interiors are from the Georgian era. There is a particularly fine collection of books in the library with its recently restored ceiling. In the cabinet you will find a marvelous grand tour collection of objects and art featuring specifically on the artist Busiri, a specialist in gouache painting. The Chinese wallpaper in the Chinese bedroom is particularly fine and underwent conservation in 2003. In true ‘Downton’ style life below stairs is well represented. On display is a huge collection of copperware and an old charcoal stove. Outside the hall you cannot fail to be impressed by the grounds of the house and in particular by the walled garden which is vast and spectacular as well as being a proper working garden. There are 4 potagers of different vegetables as well as excellent herb borders on each side of the lovely dovecote. There are many espaliered fruit trees on the walls of the garden including cherries, peaches, figs and apricots. There are many fine tree specimens throughout the park including red oaks, giant redwood and western red cedar. The cakes in the Carriage Brasserie are really lovely and much of the produce on sale is grown in the walled garden. Don’t forget to browse the gift shop where there are many delightful gifts on display. When traveling in your Norfolk motorhome hire don’t miss a lovely day out at Felbrigg Hall. Grimes Graves

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Norfolk

If a truly historic day out is up your street then you won’t get much more ancient a site to explore than that of Grimes Graves. This enormous Neolithic flint mining complex is thought to date back to 3000-1900 years BC although the site may have been used for flint mining right up until the bronze and iron ages and maybe even later. The area covers a vast 96 acres and its sizes alone, signifies the importance flint to the ancient Britain. It would have been used mainly for axe heads in the very early times and later on for strikers for muskets. There are at least 433 mine shafts that are dug through the chalk top layers to reach the flint seams, with some shafts reaching a depth of 40 feet. Amazingly, more than 2,000 tonnes of chalk would have been removed manually from some of the larger pits to enable the miners to reach flint of the quality that they required. These in filled shafts give the landscape the lunar quality that it has today. The name Grimes is thought to come from the Anglo-Saxon for Grim, another name for Woden, their God. Incredibly, the miners would use picks made from the shed antlers of red deer and there is evidence that these animals were of great importance to the people and were used as a source of skins as well as meat. If you are feeling adventurous, you will have the opportunity to descend by ladder into one of the excavated pits and see the seams of black flint. Please note that children under five are not able to use the ladders. When traveling in your Norfolk motorhome hire, you will find this ancient site 7 miles North West of Thetford off the A134. Holkham Hall

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in East Anglia

This spectacular house by the coast near Wells is well worth a visit if you are in the area.  Holkam Hall is open from 1st April till 31st October on sunday monday and thursday afternoons between noon and 4pm. Built between 1734 and 1764, the hall was the home of the Coke Family and the Earls of Leicester. Thomas Coke loved the Palladian style that he had lived with during his Grand Tour. After six years of travel he collected many expensive and note worthy manuscripts, art and books that formed the foundations of the treasures housed within Holkham Hall.  There is also a bygones Museum a gift shop and stable cafe. The real jewel to see here is the magnificent hall inside. Called the Marble Hall it is quite stunning. Its not made of marble at all, and is in fact produced from Derbyshire Alabaster. How the Alabaster got from Derbyshire to Holkham was an amazing and expensive project in itself. It was transported by boat from Derbyshire up the river Trent, through nottingham shire to Gainsborough in Lincolnshire. Then the final journey as the alabaster was transfererred to a ship and taken out to sea and round to the harbour at Wells and thence to Holkham Hall. This is quite a journey. The design for the hall was copied from the Temple of Fortuna Virilis in Rome. The ceiling is fifty foot above you and the whole effect is awe inspiring. It took twenty years for local crafts men to carve the details into the alabaster. There are also treasures brought back from abroad by previous owners. It is truly a treasure. Holkham Hall is easy to find as it is just two miles west of Wells-next-the-Sea on the main A149.If you are traveling from Fakenham, follow the brown tourist signs on the B1105 or A149. Motorhomes should  follow the yellow signs that indicate ‘Holkam Hall Coaches’ as height restrictions apply on other routes. You should then enter the park via the automated South Gates for a trouble free access to this magnificent place. You can also hire cycles from the courtyard if you are feeling particularly energetic! Including Holkham Hall in your Norfolk Motorhome Hire Holiday tour of Norfolk will certainly be of interest to most family members. For more information click the blue text tothe link below.

Houghton Hall

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in East Anglia

This impressive stately house was once the home of Sir Robert Walpole who was the UKs first Prime Minister. It is a very grand residence that is still in family ownership. It is open to the public on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Sundays and bank holidays during their season which is from Easter Sunday till September 27th. There is an admission charge. The grounds hold a deer herd that is stunning to see. They are all bred on the park and form the Houghton Fallow Deer Stud. They are carefully bred from stock from Hungary, Sweden and the Danish Royal Park. Many are quite pale or white in colour as a result and are not albinos. Inside the house you will find the interiors are 18th century fine examples of the designer, William Kent. Of particular interest to both children and adults will be the fascinating collections of painted model soldiers amassed by the 6th Marquess, Lord Cholmondeley.  His personal interest in the campaigns of the Napoleonic period led to him producing quite extraordinary reconstructed model tableaus of battles. His passion for his hobby has left a legacy that is now his museum. His collection is likely to inspire many children to start on the path of collecting and painting models. The gardens outside the house are also well worth a mention as they gained the “Garden of the Year Award” from Christies and the Historic Houses Association.  To get to Houghton Hall in your East Anglia Motorhome Hire turn off the A148 King’s Lynn to Cromer road. Norwich Camping and Caravanning Club Site

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in England

This is a site set in a rural location yet only a half hour walk into Norwich city. Alternatively you can catch a bus into Norwich just a quarter of a mile from the campsite entrance. The campsite is located on the banks of the river. There is access to the riverbank for fishing during the fishing season (16 June to site closing date). You do require a current rod license before you start fishing. The river can get very weedy in summer months. Unfortunately, the site is close to the railway line, so there may be some noise when you are pitched here. Next door to the campsite there is a smallholding with chickens and geese. Norwich has all the large stores and shops you would expect of a major city. It also has two Farmers’ Markets, one at the Norfolk Showground on the second Saturday of the month the other at the Forum, on the first and third Sundays of the month. The local butcher near the campsite sells home-reared meat. Norwich was originally one of Englands largest towns in 1066 and it certainly is historic and well worth a visit. You are also close to the Norfolk Broads if you want to tour with your Norfolk Campervan hire in the county. For more details of the campsite click on the blue text below.

Oxburgh Hall

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in Norfolk

In the thirteenth century Oxburgh Hall was a fortified manor house belonging to the Weyland family. Subsequently the property found itself in the hands of the Bedingfields and in 1482 a license to crenellate was given to Edmund Beddingfield and he began the construction of the fortress and the wide moat. You definitely won’t forget your first sighting of this beautiful house. It conjures up the typical romantic images of knights and fair ladies from our child hood imaginings. The Hall is known for its priest hole in which Catholic priests would have taken refuge if there was a raid whilst they were visiting the house. Many great houses do contain a priest hole, but unlike many others this one is open to the public, you access the room through a trap door in the tiled floor which when shut blend seamlessly with the rest of the floor. On display within the Hall are samples of needlework that Mary Queen of Scots made whilst under house arrest with the Earl of Shrewsbury as well as others made by Bess of Hardwick. Whilst there is a lot of interest within the Hall itself, there are plenty of beautiful woodland walks surrounding the house and free garden tours to enjoy. It is well worth climbing the Tudor gatehouse to enjoy the spectacular views of the lovely Norfolk countryside. You will find Oxburgh Hall in your Norfolk motorhome hire 7 miles south-west of Swaffham and 17 miles south of Kings Lynn. For further information on the Hall, please click the blue link below.

You may not see Royalty, but you can at least stay on the Royal Sandringham Estate Camp Site. It is well screened and set in a lovely woodland location on the estate, with pitches set between the mature trees. There are a number of events hosted by the Sandringham estate throughout the year and if you love country fairs and activity it is worth trying to book your pitch when an event is taking place. On the site boundary is a well stocked food shop which sells locally-produced meat, vegetables and fruit. Alternatively, eat like royalty from food purchased from the Sandringham Visitor Centre. They sell produce from the Royal Estate, including apple juice, pies and preserves.  The campsite has Wi-Fi access available but poor TV reception and you may require a satellite dish to get a signal for your Motorhome television viewing. Sandringham House is open to visitors and there is also a museum of royal memorabilia. The estate covers 60 acres of ground and 600 acres of woodland. The area is also renowned for Norfolk Lavender and you can visit the fields at Heacham and find out about harvesting, distilling and growing your own. There are no toilet or shower facilities at this forest campsite. You must rely on your own on board facilities. There are chemical disposal points and you can buy gas cylinders here as well (no hook ups available). Whilst the facilities are basic, the scenery is certainly lovely with the river Thet running at the side of the site and the forest all around you. It’s a very relaxing place to stay with fishing on the river(permits required) and many cycling and walking trails that criss cross the forest. Wild life lovers will find plenty to interest them as well as there are many bird species and wild deer here. This site is ideal for exploring the Norfolk Broads and is very close to the Forestry Commission’s High Lodge Forest Centre (with more cycling and walking routes).  If your teenagers are seeking adventure try GoApe, the high-wire forest adventure, is close to Thetford. There is a small shop on site that sells basics and just two and a half miles away there are places to eat out at the local village. This is a Gold David Bellamy Conservation Award site, and dogs are allowed. If you are looking for a short relaxing forest break  or a one night stop over in your Norfolk Campervan Hire this is a good place to stay. For more information click on the blue text below.

Thursford Collection

SEARCH: Motorhomes for Hire in East Anglia

The Thursford collection began life as an assortment of steam engines collected by the late enthusiast George Cushing. His collection expanded to include fairground rides and organs including a Wurlitzer which is the fourth largest of its kind in Europe. He housed his fascinating collection at Laurel Farm. He had worked here as a child, but went on to buy the farm later in life and raise his own family here. In the late 1930’s when steam power was on the decline, George was horrified by the scrapping of many magnificent steam engines. He bought as many as he could and restored and housed them on the farm in an array of old farm buildings. Upon his death the collection was set up as a charitable trust which today is still administered by the Cushing family. Although the collection is still the mainstay of the museum, Thursford has become increasingly famous for the fantastic Christmas spectacular which it puts on every year. Coach loads of people travel to the show from all around the country and the shows themselves are said to rival any West end production. You will be entertained by over 100 dancers and singers, performing a variety of Christmas songs and carols and dance routines from the modern to the traditional. At Christmas time there is a magical journey to see Santa. On the way to meet the man himself, you will pass penguins, polar bears and giant teddies as well as all Santa’s elves working in the toy factory. Watch out for the snow balls when working your way through the magical forest before you get to Santa’s house, where all children will receive a present. Thursford is a brilliant day out for all the family and even has the royal seal of approval having been visited by William and Kate, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. You will find the Thursford Collection in your Norfolk motorhome hire situated off the A148 half way between Fakenham and Holt. It will be marked by the brown and white tourism signs.
