Exeter Airport grew from a grass airfield base in 1937, by Exeter airplane enthusiasts.
During World War II the base had a diverse use as a fighter base then base for the accompanying operational squadrons: No 213, No 87 and No 601.
RAF Exeter was used during D-Day by the US Army Air Force (USAAF) Ninth Air Force as a troop transport base using Douglas C-47 Skytrain transporters for the 101st Airborne Division. It was then called USAAF Station 463. They famously discharged paratroops close to Carentan to help with the Normandy beachhead.
After the war the base was used by Walruses of the RAF air-sea rescue squadrons.
The Exeter base was afforded a return back to civil use in 1947, but was still used as a reserve RAF base until the 1950s. In 1952 scheduled flights from Exeter Airport were offered to the Channel Islands and more locations followed. Following a new terminal opening with runway extension Exeter became established as an important international airport in the West Country of England.
Exeter Airport now offers chartered flights to within the United Kingdom, Europe and Canada, making Exeter Airport motorhome hire a popular choice.
