Leeds Bradford International Airport (LBIA) was opened as Yeadon Aerodrome in 1931. It comprised of 60 acres of grassland beside the Bradford to Harrogate Road. Club flying and coaching was done in Cirrus, Gypsy Moth and later Puss and Leopard Moth airplanes.
In 1935 the airport was expanded to 95 acres and delivered scheduled flights to Newcastle and Edinburgh with North Eastern Airways. The West Coast Air Service offered services to Blackpool and the Isle of Man.
With the outbreak of war in 1939, the adjacent Avro Factory built many important aircraft modesl: Avro 652 Anson – coastal patrol reconnaissance aircraft, the Dam Buster’s Lancaster Bomber, York and Avro Type 694 Lincoln aircraft.
After the war BKS Air Transport offered flights to Belfast, Jersey, Ostend, Southend and the Isle of Wight. In 1955 Düsseldorf was added. By the 1960′s the airport had been modernised with amended facilities. Aer Lingus started operating services to Dublin in 1960.
In 1976 tour operators such as Thomson Holidays used British Airways to offer flights to the Iberian Peninsula.
